The Campanile Hotel in Runcorn provided a warm welcome to one of the country’s best-known fundraisers – Speedo Mick – after he had spent the day in the area as part of his John O’Groats to Land’s End walkathon.
The intrepid 58-year-old fundraiser, who has raised more than £750,000 for charity wearing his Speedos, stayed at the hotel for the night after reaching the halfway point of his 1,000-mile epic journey.
His trek began on December 29 and he aims to walk about 15 miles a day until he reaches the farthest south-westerly point of the UK mainland.
Speedo Mick, whose real name is Michael Cullen, enjoyed a night’s hospitality at the Lowland Road hotel to help him prepare for the following day’s walk.
Lawrence Ngan, dual site general manager, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Mick and his two companions for the evening. His fundraising efforts are legendary and opening our doors was the least we could do for him. We’re following his progress with interest and wish him all the best as he continues his journey.”
He is raising funds for The Speedo Mick Foundation, which is a charity he set up to provide support for young people, particularly those with physical and mental health issues.
