Press Release

Cardiff, Wales - April 21, 2026

Team of 11, led by CEO and Chair of Trustees, to take on North Africa’s highest peak in support of vital local services

YMCA Cardiff is preparing to take on a major milestone in its fundraising journey as 11 supporters get ready to embark on the charity’s first ever overseas challenge.

This May, the team will travel to Morocco to climb Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa, raising vital funds to support YMCA Cardiff’s work with young people and people facing homelessness.

Leading the challenge will be YMCA Cardiff CEO Andrew Templeton and the charity’s Chair of Trustees, Dan Coles, who will join the group as they take on the demanding trek. Together, they will be part of a team of 11 determined participants who have signed up to push themselves beyond their comfort zones in support of a cause close to their hearts.

For YMCA Cardiff, the challenge represents something new and significant. While the charity has a strong track record of community fundraising events and supporter-led activity, this will be the first time it has taken on an overseas challenge of this kind.

The trek is a test of endurance and a powerful demonstration of belief in YMCA Cardiff’s mission to support people through hardship, create opportunities and help young people and adults move forward with confidence.

Funds raised through the Mount Toubkal Challenge will help YMCA Cardiff continue delivering life changing support through its housing, youth and community services.

Andrew Templeton, CEO of YMCA Cardiff, said:

“This is a real first for YMCA Cardiff and I am incredibly proud of everyone who has signed up to take part. Climbing Mount Toubkal will be a huge challenge, both physically and mentally, but it is nothing compared to the challenges many of the people we support face in their daily lives.

We hope this challenge will not only raise vital funds, but also raise awareness of the work YMCA Cardiff does every day. I would encourage anyone who can to get behind the team and support us.”

As preparations continue, YMCA Cardiff is calling on supporters, partners and the wider community to sponsor the challenge and help the team reach its fundraising target.

People who would like to support can sponsor YMCA Cardiff CEO Andrew Templeton through his fundraising page here:

Every donation, no matter the size, will help YMCA Cardiff continue to provide support where it is needed most.

With the countdown now underway, the Mount Toubkal Challenge is shaping up to be an unforgettable experience for everyone involved and a proud moment in YMCA Cardiff’s history.
