For the 9th year running United Nationalities of Marbella (UNMS) is joining together on Tuesday 20th May at 11.30am in the Harbour Restaurant. The aim for this year is to bring together charities, associations and key stakeholders to foster collaboration and develop sustainable solutions for the elderly community on the Costa del Sol.
National statistics for Spain indicate that about 19.6% of the population is aged 65 and over. Applying this percentage to the Costa del Sol, it’s reasonable to assume that there are approximately 276,000 residents aged 65 and above in the region.
It’s important to note that the Costa del Sol is a popular destination for retirees, particularly from other European countries. This trend may result in a higher proportion
of residents over 65 compared to the national average. For instance, a study focusing on European retirees in the Costa del Sol found that the average age of retired immigrants was just over 66 years, with 17% being over 75 years old. (Source Academia)
While many enjoy a vibrant lifestyle, others face challenges that impact their quality of life, including navigating social care, healthcare, accessing financial support, and overcoming language barriers.
Despite the dedicated efforts of numerous charities, associations, and support networks, there remains a pressing need for a more coordinated approach. By uniting organisations that serve the elderly, we can address common challenges more effectively and ensure vital resources reach those in need.

Why This Event is Essential
Bridging the Gaps in Support: While various organisations provide invaluable assistance, a lack of coordination means elderly residents often struggle to navigate available resources.
Establishing a Centralised Helpline: A help line with fluent Spanish-speakers,
preferably native, is urgently needed to assist with administrative paperwork, to direct callers to relevant organisations and connect them with essential services. In order for this helpline to be effective it needs to be a paying position and will require substantial funding.
Improving Access to Social care, Healthcare & Support Services: Many
elderly residents face difficulties in finding qualified nurses, carers, or appropriate financial aid. A shared network would streamline these processes and improve accessibility.
Overcoming Language Barriers: Many expatriates struggle with Spanish
bureaucracy, making it crucial to have bilingual support staff who can guide them through the system.
Advocacy for Better Support: A united approach strengthens our ability to work with local authorities, pushing for improved resources, funding, and policy changes that benefit elderly care.

Sponsorship funds are allocated to reuniting the relevant associations and organisations and to the Charity Hadas Caradas (Registered Charity 14132) to be allocated entirely to covering the costs of qualified nurses visiting those most in need who can’t afford it themselves.
