Top referral vet centre in £10k charity pledge as part of 25th anniversary

A leading veterinary hospital in the UK is celebrating 25 years of providing industry-leading treatment to sick and injured animals by pledging to carry out 25 fundraising events and donate £10,000 to charity.

The fundraising efforts are part of a number of exciting pledges made by Davies Veterinary Specialists, in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Other initiatives the Linnaeus-owned hospital has pledged during its anniversary year include opening a sustainable reflection garden to build on its pioneering sustainability work, sponsoring a local sports team and supporting schools and businesses in the region.

Internally, team members have also committed to carry out acts of kindness every month, while the management team has pledged to support its nurses with events to help them progress their careers, along with holding CPD events for the wider veterinary industry.

Ben Orton, hospital director at Davies, said: “This year marks a very special milestone for Davies as we celebrate 25 years in business and we’re going all out to make it a very special 12 months for our team, colleagues in the profession and also our local community.

“Some of our pledges are ambitious but I’m confident our dedicated team will achieve all of them, including raising £10,000 for charity by carrying out 25 fundraising events throughout the year, as everyone at Davies appreciates this significant anniversary year is a fantastic opportunity to help those around us.”

While the pledges will mark a year to remember, 2023 also offers the opportunity to reflect on some groundbreaking achievements at Davies since 1998, which has grown to be one of the largest and most diverse referral hospitals in Europe.

In 2004, just six years after opening its doors, the hospital expanded its premises to accommodate the state-of-the-art services it was providing, while in 2005, Davies was again at the forefront of the UK veterinary industry with the installation of a new MRI scanner, the first of its kind at a vet practice, plus the introduction of a new neurology service.

In 2006, a Davies team member played a key role in establishing the Animal Blood Register, while 2008 saw the installation of a new high speed CT scanner, once again the only type of its kind in the UK.

Jump forward to 2018 and pioneering Davies became the first veterinary practice to achieve accreditation from Investors in the Environment (iiE), paving the way the fellow practices and hospitals to tackle the eco-friendly agenda and join the nationwide scheme.

Specialists at Davies have also pushed the boundaries of surgical procedures. Notable operations include hi-tech cataract surgery to restore a West Highland terrier’s vision, saving the life of a working police dog who was stabbed in the line of duty and using human techniques to cure dogs with life-threatening heart conditions.
