EDITORIAL INSIGHT: Context, industry insight and market perspectives of this news story

Recognition at sector awards can offer valuable visibility for independent retailers and emerging leaders, particularly in a competitive market such as UK convenience retail. For a regional operator, being shortlisted for a national industry award provides not only personal acknowledgement but also a platform to highlight the business’s contribution to its local community and the sector more broadly.

While individual accolades may not directly impact commercial performance, they can support talent retention and brand reputation, especially for family-run businesses seeking to expand their profile. For others in the sector, the inclusion of younger leaders among award finalists reflects the ongoing generational change within convenience retail, as businesses adapt to evolving customer needs and market conditions.

Abu Bakr Supermarkets managing director Hamza Hussain has been named a finalist in the Next Gen Award category at the prestigious Asian Trader Awards, adding to an impressive run of recognition for the young West Yorkshire business leader. The managing director of the Batley-based supermarket group has been shortlisted among the next generation of talent shaping the UK convenience retail industry, following his recent success in the 30 Under 30 awards. Hamza’s latest nomination recognises his contribution to the family-run business and his ambitions to build on its established presence in West Yorkshire while exploring opportunities for future growth.

The Asian Trader Awards are a major event in the UK convenience retail calendar, bringing together retailers, suppliers and industry leaders to celebrate achievement and innovation across the sector. The winner of the Next Gen Award will be announced on November 4 at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London, where industry figures will gather for the annual awards ceremony.

For Hamza, the latest shortlist comes at an important point in his career, following his recognition in the 30 Under 30 awards, which celebrate young talent making an impact across the industry.

Speaking about the latest recognition, Hamza Hussain said: “Being named a finalist for the Next Gen Award is a real honour, especially after the recent 30 Under 30 recognition. I see this as a reflection of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes every day at Abu Bakr Supermarkets.

“Our business has always been built around family values, our customers and the communities we serve. I’m fortunate to work alongside a brilliant team, and any success we achieve is down to the people who continue to support and drive the business forward.

“We’re ambitious about the future and want to keep building something that our family, our colleagues and our local communities can be proud of. It’s fantastic to have that journey recognised by the industry.”

Abu Bakr Supermarkets has established a presence across West Yorkshire, serving customers with a broad selection of groceries, fresh produce, halal meat and world foods. Under Hamza’s leadership, the business continues to focus on customer service, value and developing its offering to meet the needs of changing communities and shopping habits. Hamza’s ambitions extend beyond the day-to-day running of the business, with a focus on developing the Abu Bakr brand and exploring opportunities to bring its offering to more customers.

The dual recognition from the 30 Under 30 awards and the Asian Trader Awards highlights a significant period for the young managing director and the Batley-based business. With the Next Gen Award winner set to be announced in London on November 4, Hamza will be hoping to add another accolade to an already promising year.

Notes to editors

The story began in 1987, when Abid Hussain, then just 17, took over the family business. With long hours, determination and a hands-on approach, he laid the groundwork for a brand that would go on to become a well-known name across West Yorkshire. A major turning point arrived in 2002. Abid Food Store rebranded as Abu Bakr Supermarkets, signalling both a new identity and an ambition to scale. That same year, the company opened its Queen’s Road store — its first step beyond the original premises and the start of a steady expansion strategy. Further growth followed in 2004 with the Roundhay Road branch, strengthening the brand’s presence in Leeds and giving more families access to its value-driven offering. A decade later, in 2015, Abu Bakr expanded again with its Beeston store, a move that bolstered its community footprint in another busy part of the city. In 2017, the business invested heavily in expanding its product range. Fresh produce, halal meat counters, and an extensive selection of world foods were introduced — a strategic shift that aligned the brand more closely with the needs of the region’s diverse communities and cemented its reputation for global choice at local prices. The company’s momentum continued into the 2020s. In 2022, Abu Bakr Supermarkets opened its Kirkstall branch, bringing its services to a new and vibrant customer base and widening its reach across Leeds. A further store was opened in 2025, in Batley.
