u3a helps people build meaningful social connections, combat loneliness, and support both physical and mental well-being. Whether you fancy strumming away on a ukulele, tripping the light fantastic in a Bollywood dance class, or exploring the wonders of astronomy, there are always plenty of opportunities to enjoy and develop your personal interests.
Positivity plays a vital role in ageing well, alongside staying socially connected and keeping the mind active. The u3a Learn to Live report highlights that while 60% of dementia cases are linked to Alzheimer’s disease, the remaining 40% are associated with environmental and social factors, including isolation and a lack of mental stimulation.
u3a is a national learning organisation for people no longer in full-time work. Members come together to share interests, make new friends, and have fun. With more than 400,000 members across over 1,000 u3a groups throughout the UK, activities are run by members, for members, creating a welcoming and supportive community.
Research shows that regular social interaction has a powerful positive impact on mental well-being, confidence, and overall quality of life. For many people, joining their local u3a becomes a real turning point, as these member experiences show:
“My circle of friends and acquaintances has been steadily growing. From first walking into the meeting hall and not knowing a soul, I now find there’s not enough time to chat with everyone that I’ve got to know since I first joined my u3a nearly five years ago.”
“As well as the physical benefits, there are the social benefits. I’ve made lots of friends, and we meet outside of netball for coffee and Christmas meals. It’s great fun, there’s plenty of camaraderie, and we have a real laugh.”
“Being a committee member is great fun. I enjoy it very much. There is tea and laughter – and biscuits! We laugh, we make friends – I’ve made so many friends in u3a. We moved here before we retired, and we didn’t know a soul. u3a was the thing that gave me all my friends”
u3a is open to anyone no longer in full-time employment, regardless of educational background. There are no exams, no qualifications, and no pressure, just curiosity, companionship, and community.
