Local businesses often play a vital role in supporting the fabric of their communities, and initiatives such as the Abu Bakr Supermarket Community Awards illustrate how retailers can foster stronger neighbourhood ties. By formally recognising individuals whose efforts might otherwise go unnoticed, the supermarket is positioning itself as more than just a place to shop, but as an active participant in community life.

For those living and working in Yorkshire, especially in areas served by Abu Bakr Supermarket, the scheme offers a platform to highlight and celebrate local contributions, whether from educators, volunteers, or neighbours. Press Release

24 July 2026

Abu Bakr Supermarket has announced the launch of the Abu Bakr Supermarket Community Awards, a new initiative dedicated to recognising and celebrating individuals who go above and beyond to make a positive difference within their local communities.

The awards will honour everyday heroes from across Yorkshire, including students, teachers, parents, volunteers, carers, neighbours, and community champions whose kindness, dedication and selfless acts have had a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

Each selected recipient will be recognised as an “Abu Bakr Community Hero” and will receive a commemorative trophy along with a specially prepared Abu Bakr Supermarket hamper as a token of appreciation.

The initiative reflects Abu Bakr Supermarket’s long-standing commitment to supporting the communities it serves, reinforcing the belief that acts of kindness, compassion and service deserve to be recognised and celebrated.
Community members will soon be invited to nominate individuals who inspire others through their actions, whether that’s supporting local charities, mentoring young people, helping neighbours, excelling in education, or making their neighbourhood a better place to live.

Hamza Hussain, Managing Director of Abu Bakr Supermarket, said: “At Abu Bakr Supermarket, we believe that the true strength of our communities lies in the people who quietly make a difference every single day. The Abu Bakr Community Awards are about shining a spotlight on those unsung heroes who give their time, support others and inspire positive change without expecting anything in return. Whether it’s a student who has overcome adversity, a teacher who has changed lives, a parent who goes the extra mile, or a volunteer serving the community, we want them to know that their efforts matter and are appreciated. We hope these awards inspire even more people to look after one another and strengthen the communities we are proud to serve.”

The Abu Bakr Supermarket Community Awards are expected to become a celebration of community spirit, recognising the individuals whose actions often go unnoticed but whose impact is felt by many.

Details on how to submit nominations, will be announced in the coming weeks through Abu Bakr Supermarket’s social media channels and in-store.

Abu Bakr Supermarket is one of Yorkshire’s leading independent supermarket groups, serving communities across Leeds and surrounding areas. Notes to editors

The story began in 1987, when Abid Hussain, then just 17, took over the family business. With long hours, determination and a hands-on approach, he laid the groundwork for a brand that would go on to become a well-known name across West Yorkshire. A major turning point arrived in 2002. Abid Food Store rebranded as Abu Bakr Supermarkets, signalling both a new identity and an ambition to scale. That same year, the company opened its Queen’s Road store — its first step beyond the original premises and the start of a steady expansion strategy. Further growth followed in 2004 with the Roundhay Road branch, strengthening the brand’s presence in Leeds and giving more families access to its value-driven offering. A decade later, in 2015, Abu Bakr expanded again with its Beeston store, a move that bolstered its community footprint in another busy part of the city. In 2017, the business invested heavily in expanding its product range. Fresh produce, halal meat counters, and an extensive selection of world foods were introduced — a strategic shift that aligned the brand more closely with the needs of the region’s diverse communities and cemented its reputation for global choice at local prices. The company’s momentum continued into the 2020s. In 2022, Abu Bakr Supermarkets opened its Kirkstall branch, bringing its services to a new and vibrant customer base and widening its reach across Leeds. A further store was opened in 2025, in Batley.
