Award-winning journalist, photographer, and artist Vinay Jalla staged his first-ever solo art exhibition this month at Broomwood Community Centre as part of the ‘Timperley Celebrates’ festival, and the result was an outpouring of joy, laughter, and community pride.

What made the exhibition remarkable wasn’t just the humour in Vinay’s work, but the fact that the entire showcase was delivered without a single penny spent, powered entirely by community goodwill.

The exhibition featured Vinay’s cartoons, watercolours, and drawings, each laced with a playful wit about everyday life. From quirky takes on cultural identity to satirical sketches on social habits, his art proved universally relatable. Children giggled, parents chuckled, and visitors left still smiling — with one guest declaring: “We need more positivity like this in society. Comedy is an art, and it holds the society together. Laughter is the best medicine.”

Local voices praised the exhibition’s impact:

  • “The cartoons are so cleverly done. I can relate to them. Brought a smile to my face for sure.” – Fran, Broomwood Community Centre
  • “These cartoons are thought-provoking and have a philosophical meaning in them. Well done.” – Arun Jayaraman, Heartfulness
  • “The cartoons are too good, and I couldn’t stop laughing.” – Phil Kanes, musician

For Vinay, the success of his debut wasn’t about ticket sales or commercial accolades. It was about connection.

“The biggest success wasn’t the art on the walls, but the conversations and laughter that filled the room. To know my work resonated with people, without barriers, is something I’ll always treasure,” Vinay Jalla reflected.

The wider Timperley Celebrates event highlighted the borough’s rich heritage, from its links to cultural icons like Caroline Aherne and The Stone Roses, to grassroots creativity shaping its future. Trafford Council praised the initiative for ensuring everyone has access to culture and heritage — a mission Vinay’s exhibition embodied perfectly.

As a Manchester-based artist with more than 25 years’ experience in media and visual storytelling, Vinay Jalla is no stranger to capturing the human side of the city’s stories. Known as the “Banana Artist” for his environmental works tackling food waste, his practice spans photography, illustration, and social commentary — always rooted in community.

With his debut exhibition a resounding success, Vinay is already preparing new projects, including TEAL LINES, that promise to bring fresh perspectives to Manchester’s cultural landscape.
