EDITORIAL INSIGHT: Context, industry insight and market perspectives of this news story

Fond & Fold’s entry into the personalised digital card market offers a streamlined alternative to traditional card customisation, removing the need for customers to interact with complex design tools or write their own messages. By starting with finished designs and limiting customer input to photo upload and pre-set wording, the studio positions itself for users seeking convenience and immediate results.

This approach may appeal to consumers looking for a balance between personalisation and simplicity, especially as digital gifting continues to grow in popularity. The fixed pricing and one-off purchase model could also attract those wary of subscription-based services. For independent creatives and small studios, Fond & Fold’s model highlights how automation and pre-designed options can lower barriers for customers without compromising on a sense of personal touch.

The new online studio starts with finished card designs, so customers can personalize a card without writing prompts or using a design editor.

With Fond & Fold, making a personalized illustrated card starts with choosing a design for the person who will receive it. Customers browse a gallery of finished designs, add their photo and preview the resulting card for free. They decide whether to buy after seeing it.

The newly launched independent studio is available at fondandfold.com. Its opening collection has 12 digital designs for birthdays, thank-you messages, Christmas and Halloween. Each shop card is a one-time purchase of US$9.99 before applicable sales tax, with no subscription or credits.

After choosing a design, customers upload a photo that meets its requirements and select from the wording offered for that card. There is no blank canvas to fill, prompt to write or layout to edit. Fond & Fold creates a watermarked preview in minutes. If the customer buys it, they receive that same image with the preview watermark removed.

A traditional portrait commission offers personal attention and room to develop an original idea, often through a brief, discussions and revisions. Modern image tools can shorten the wait and offer more styles, though customers may still need to direct the process and assess the results. Fond & Fold makes the design decisions in advance to give customers a personal illustration with less work involved in creating it.

“People can often recognize a design they love long before they can describe one from scratch,” said Lingzi Kong, founder of Fond & Fold. “Traditional commissions show the value of making something for someone in particular, while modern image technology makes that kind of personalization faster and more flexible. As creative possibilities expand, we take a less-is-more approach: fewer decisions for the customer, more judgment built into the finished card.”

Fond & Fold develops each card’s illustration style, composition, palette, typography and wording together, then tests the design with different people and photos. AI image tools create an illustration around the person in the uploaded photo, making them part of the scene instead of inserting a face into a fixed frame. Cards based on one design share a style while adapting to different people.

After purchase, customers can immediately download the high-resolution digital image, which measures 1,500 by 2,100 pixels and is sized for 5-by-7-inch printing. They can save it, send it digitally or print it themselves. Their delivery email also includes a private card link, valid for 30 days, to forward to the recipient.

The service is available at fondandfold.com.
