With the average UK household spending over £1,700 a year on energy, many are looking for ways to bring costs down.

Solar panels are often cited as one of the most effective long-term solutions, with potential savings of £300–£500 per year, depending on usage and system size.

Yet despite this, most UK homes still don’t have them installed.

Grants Reduced, Responsibility Shifted to Homeowners

While schemes such as the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) allow homeowners to earn money back for excess energy, there is currently no large-scale government grant covering installation costs.

Previous initiatives, such as the Green Homes Grant, have been withdrawn, leaving many homeowners to fund installations themselves, with typical systems costing between £5,000 and £8,000.

At the same time, schemes like the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) do exist, but are primarily targeted at low-income households or those receiving specific benefits.

This creates a clear gap between long-term benefit and short-term affordability, with many working households unable to access support.

The Scale Problem, Why It Isn’t Standard

While the cost of installing solar on a single home can range between £5,000 and £8,000, the challenge becomes far greater when applied across the UK housing stock.

Rolling out solar panels at scale across millions of homes would require tens of billions of pounds in investment, raising questions about who should fund it, homeowners, developers, or government.

Without a clear funding model or national requirement, solar remains an optional upgrade rather than a built in standard.

Industry voices are increasingly questioning whether this is a missed opportunity at scale.

From Cost Saving to Energy Earning

Beyond reducing bills, newer solar systems paired with battery storage are beginning to change how households interact with energy.

In some cases, homeowners can store excess electricity and sell it back to the grid through schemes such as the SEG, or use smart tariffs to maximise value at peak times.

This shifts solar from a cost-saving measure to a potential long-term energy asset, although awareness of these benefits remains relatively low.

Demand Rising, But Skills Must Keep Up

At the same time, interest in renewable energy is growing rapidly, creating increased demand for workers with the right skills to support installation and maintenance.

“We’re seeing growing interest in renewable technologies across the industry, but there’s still a gap between awareness and action. As demand increases, the sector needs the skills and infrastructure in place to support it.”

A Tipping Point for Solar in the UK?

With continued pressure on household finances and a long-term push toward net zero, solar energy is expected to play a much larger role in the UK’s housing future.

However, without clearer policy direction, stronger incentives, or changes to how homes are built, widespread adoption may continue to lag behind both demand and potential.
