Employer of Record Ireland warns that many international companies underestimate the complexities of hiring in Ireland, despite its business-friendly reputation. The company highlights common misunderstandings in areas like statutory sick pay and termination procedures, advising businesses to seek local expertise rather than relying solely on automated hiring platforms. This is important as it helps companies avoid legal pitfalls and ensures compliance with Irish employment laws.

International employers advised to seek local expertise despite Ireland’s business-friendly reputation

Employer of Record Ireland, a specialist employment solutions provider focused on the Irish market, says many overseas businesses underestimate the complexity of employing staff in Ireland, despite the country’s reputation as one of Europe’s more straightforward places to do business.

The company, which supports international organisations hiring employees in Ireland, says the English-speaking workforce and strong links to US and UK businesses can create a false sense of simplicity for employers coming into the country for the first time.

“Ireland is often seen as an easy option because of the shared language and the cultural similarities with the US and UK,” said Sam Barnes, Co-Founder of Employer of Record Ireland. “And in many ways it is a relatively smooth market to enter. But ‘relatively smooth’ is not the same as ‘no effort required’, and we do see companies tripping up on things they assumed would be straightforward.”

EOR Ireland, part of the Agility EOR Group, says it has seen increasing demand from international companies looking for guidance on Irish employment structures, onboarding requirements, payroll processes and worker protections.

According to the company, the most common areas of misunderstanding include probationary periods, statutory sick pay, employee classification, termination procedures and mandatory workplace policies.

“Statutory sick pay is a good example,” Barnes continued. “Ireland only introduced its statutory sick pay scheme in 2023, and the entitlements have been increasing year on year since then. If you’re basing your employment terms on what applied two years ago, or worse, on what applies in your home country, you could easily get it wrong.”

EOR Ireland notes that Ireland remains a popular destination for international hiring, particularly among technology, SaaS, professional services and life sciences companies building out European teams.

However, the company believes international employers are becoming more cautious about relying on automated or self-service hiring platforms when it comes to country-specific employment requirements.

“There’s a difference between a platform that generates a contract and a service that actually understands the local employment landscape,” Barnes added. “We find that the companies who do well in Ireland are the ones who take the time to get proper advice at the outset, rather than trying to patch things up after the fact.”

Employer of Record Ireland supports international businesses with compliant employment contracts, fully managed payroll, HR guidance and benefits administration across Ireland.
