GMR has successfully deployed a next-generation private 5G network integrated with edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology in partnership with Niral Networks, marking a significant step forward in industrial connectivity and smart operations. This deployment is designed to modernize critical functions such as automation, safety monitoring, real-time surveillance, and mobile operations across GMR’s expansive industrial facilities.
The newly launched solution combines a dedicated private 5G network with powerful edge AI processing. Unlike public cellular networks, this private setup gives GMR full control over network performance and security, ensuring real-time responsiveness and data privacy for mission-critical applications.
Meeting Complex Operational Needs
GMR’s facilities cover large outdoor areas and complex indoor environments where traditional connectivity like Wi-Fi or public 4G/5G was insufficient. These older technologies struggled to support high-bandwidth use cases such as video surveillance or drone-based inspections. To address this, GMR chose a private 5G solution that delivers reliable, low-latency connectivity without relying on public networks.
The solution’s design includes a 3GPP-compliant standalone 5G core and a private cloud that runs on-premises. This architecture supports not only high-speed data transfer but also edge AI workloads, enabling real-time data processing without sending sensitive information offsite.
Enhanced Automation and Safety
Key capabilities of the rollout include real-time automation of plant processes, enhanced worker safety systems, and improved operational visibility. The system supports high-bandwidth uplink traffic needed for live video feeds from surveillance cameras and drones, improving situational awareness and reducing response times to operational events.
Voice and video communications are supported through integrated IMS services, and software-defined network management simplifies ongoing operations. Network slicing ensures that critical applications receive dedicated bandwidth and guaranteed performance, whether for voice communications or live video analytics.
Zero-Fiber Backhaul and Flexible Deployment
One notable feature of the deployment is the use of a zero-fiber backhaul approach, which uses light-based communication to connect radios to the core network without laying new fiber cables. This strategy reduced deployment time and minimized infrastructure disruption, while still delivering robust throughput and coverage across large facility areas.
Scalable and Secure Architecture
The solution’s ruggedized architecture is built for industrial environments and is designed to scale. GMR now has the option to expand similar private 5G networks to additional plants and sites, with centralized management possible through Niral Networks’ controller technology. This allows multi-site oversight and consistent configuration across deployments.
Security remains a priority, with the private network creating an air-gapped environment that isolates critical data and reduces cyber-attack exposure. Data stays within the company’s infrastructure, protecting sensitive operational information.
