To understand what it looks like from inside the industry, we sat down with Doug Roberts, Chief Technology Officer of Cytranet, a provider of telecom and internet services for businesses, government agencies, and enterprise customers. Roberts is optimistic, and he makes a persuasive case for why the current wave of demand is good news for the customers Cytranet serves.

“Everyone is talking about the size of AI data centers, and rightly so,” Roberts said. “But the part that gets less attention is the connectivity that ties all of it together. A data center is only as useful as the network that reaches it. That is the layer we live in, and it has never been more important.”

Roberts explained that the surge in AI workloads has changed what enterprise and government customers ask for. A few years ago, the conversation was mostly about raw bandwidth. Today, he said, customers care just as much about latency, resilience, and the ability to scale quickly without ripping out what they already have.

“An AI application behaves very differently from a traditional business application,” he said. “It moves enormous amounts of data, it is sensitive to delay, and demand can spike without much warning. So we have been engineering our network to be predictable under exactly those conditions. That means more fiber routes, more diversity so there is no single point of failure, and capacity that customers can turn up on their own schedule rather than waiting weeks.”

That philosophy shows up in how Cytranet has been investing. Roberts described a steady expansion of the company’s fiber footprint, deeper interconnection with the major cloud and data center hubs, and upgrades that let the company add capacity in software rather than sending a crew out every time a customer grows. The goal, he said, is to make growth feel effortless for the customer even when the engineering behind it is anything but.

The grid came up more than once in our conversation, echoing a theme that has been running through industry coverage lately. Power availability is now one of the biggest constraints on where and how fast new capacity can come online. Roberts sees that as a reason for telecom providers to be smarter, not discouraged.

“Power is a real limit, and we respect it,” he said. “The answer is to be efficient with what we deploy. Newer optical equipment moves far more data per watt than the gear it replaces, so every upgrade we make is also an efficiency gain. We would rather squeeze more out of a sustainable footprint than chase capacity we cannot power responsibly.”

For government customers in particular, Roberts emphasized reliability and security. Public agencies are adopting AI tools for everything from citizen services to data analysis, and they need networks that meet strict standards without slowing anything down. He said Cytranet approaches those engagements as long-term partnerships rather than one-time installations.

“Government work holds you to a high bar, and we like that,” he said. “It forces discipline. When you build a network that a public agency can trust with sensitive workloads, every other customer benefits from that same rigor.”

Asked what he would tell a business owner who feels overwhelmed by the pace of change, Roberts kept it simple. “You do not have to solve AI overnight, and you do not have to become a network engineer,” he said. “What you need is a connectivity partner who is already thinking a few years ahead, so the network is ready when you are. That is our job, and we take it seriously.”

Looking forward, Roberts is confident that the companies who invest wisely now will define the next decade of connectivity. “This is one of the most exciting periods I have seen in this industry,” he said. “The demand is real, the technology is improving fast, and the customers who lean into it are going to come out stronger. We intend to help as many of them as we can get there.”

It is a message that fits the moment. While much of the AI conversation focuses on eye-catching numbers, Cytranet is making a quieter and arguably more durable bet: that the businesses and agencies of the future will be defined not just by the applications they run, but by the strength and reliability of the networks that carry them.
