Affordable meals aim to introduce international students to British food culture, while supporting over 20 Asian and international student societies in Hyde Park.

Leeds-based Abu Bakr Supermarket has launched two new £3 student meal deals — Masala Fish & Chips and an International Meal Deal — at its store in Hyde Park – aimed at helping international students enjoy affordable, culturally inclusive meals near the University of Leeds.

The initiative combines iconic British dishes with globally-inspired flavours, allowing students from across the world to experience British cuisine while keeping food accessible and budget-friendly.

Fish and chips is one of Britain’s most recognisable comfort foods, historically valued for its affordability and filling nature. By adding masala spices, Abu Bakr Supermarket introduces this British classic to international students with a flavour twist that celebrates cultural diversity while keeping the meal familiar and approachable.

The £3 International Meal Deal includes hot dishes, wraps, or snacks accompanied by a choice of karak chai or a soft drink, providing both a taste of home and an introduction to British food culture.

“Fish and chips is a British classic, but we also know students are feeling the pinch,” said Abu Bakr Supermarket MD Hamza Hussain.

‘’We’ve absorbed the cost of the fish ourselves rather than passing it on, because we want to give something back to the student community here in Hyde Park. Whether students try Masala Fish & Chips or the International Meal Deal, our aim is to provide meals that are affordable, filling, and culturally inclusive, while introducing international students to British food culture.”

The deals are designed to help Leeds’ Asian and international student society students feel at home, including:

Bengali Society, Arab Society, British Chinese Society, Chinese Society, East Asian Research Society, Filipino Society, Indian Student Association, Iranian Society, Indonesian Society, Japanese Society, Korean Society, Malayalee Society, Malaysian Society, Pakistani Society, Qatari Society, Singapore Society, Sri Lankan Society, Taiwan Society, and Thai Society.

Both deals are available exclusively through Abu Bakr’s International student scheme, but are also available for YK based students, making it simple for those at Leeds University and beyond to access affordable meals while engaging with their cultural communities.

Abu Bakr Supermarket plans to continue collaborating with student societies across Leeds to create additional meal deals and culturally inspired offers throughout the academic year.

Notes to editors

NOTES TO EDITORS The story began in 1987, when Abid Hussain, then just 17, took over the family business. With long hours, determination and a hands-on approach, he laid the groundwork for a brand that would go on to become a well-known name across West Yorkshire. A major turning point arrived in 2002. Abid Food Store rebranded as Abu Bakr Supermarkets, signalling both a new identity and an ambition to scale. That same year, the company opened its Queen’s Road store — its first step beyond the original premises and the start of a steady expansion strategy. Further growth followed in 2004 with the Roundhay Road branch, strengthening the brand’s presence in Leeds and giving more families access to its value-driven offering. A decade later, in 2015, Abu Bakr expanded again with its Beeston store, a move that bolstered its community footprint in another busy part of the city. In 2017, the business invested heavily in expanding its product range. Fresh produce, halal meat counters, and an extensive selection of world foods were introduced — a strategic shift that aligned the brand more closely with the needs of the region’s diverse communities and cemented its reputation for global choice at local prices. The company’s momentum continued into the 2020s. In 2022, Abu Bakr Supermarkets opened its Kirkstall branch, bringing its services to a new and vibrant customer base and widening its reach across Leeds. In 2025, a flagship store opened in Batley, West Yorkshire. The company is set to open a number of new stores in 2026/27.
