As Canada focuses on climate competitiveness in the federal budget, a new study from the Energy Futures Lab demonstrates how Alberta can capture global and North American market opportunities through low-carbon economic growth.
Alberta’s Future Competitiveness and the Next Wave of Growth: Building the industries of tomorrow examines 16 emerging resource-based, low-carbon sectors set to contribute to Alberta’s economy and identifies five sectors poised for strong growth:
- Clean energy enablers – nuclear, waste-to-engery, solar & wind, and geothermal; providing low-emission power to attract new industries and investment.
- Critical minerals processing – building the missing midstream for allied supply chains and moving Canada beyond a “rip and ship” model to capture more value at home.
- The Energy Futures Lab has also released an accompanying Industrial Development Playbook highlighting how this can be achieved
- Green chemistry – leveraging Alberta’s petrochemical strengths to meet global demand.
- Alternative proteins – tapping into the rising plant-based nutrition market.
- Carbon capture and storage – applying Albertan expertise to decarbonize multiple sectors and to lead in exporting technology and services abroad.
The report also includes six policy recommendations designed to strengthen Alberta’s economic competitiveness.
