New York City will once again come alive with the vibrant sounds of chanting, music and celebration as the Hare Krishna Festival, also known as Ratha-yatra or the Festival of Chariots, marks its 50th anniversary on Saturday, June 13, 2026. The Golden Jubilee celebration coincides with another historic milestone: the 60th anniversary of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), founded in New York City in 1966 by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

The festival will begin with a spectacular procession of three giant hand-pulled chariots traveling down Fifth Avenue from 41st St to Washington Square Park. Thousands of participants are expected to join in traditional kirtan chanting, music, dancing, cultural performances, yoga and meditation experiences, spiritual exhibits and a complimentary vegetarian feast.

This year’s celebration commemorates one of the most remarkable chapters in New York’s cultural and spiritual history. On July 18, 1976, Srila Prabhupada’s followers achieved what many thought impossible: bringing three towering festival chariots onto Fifth Avenue despite a longstanding city policy prohibiting new parades on the avenue.

The inaugural Fifth Avenue festival drew thousands of participants and spectators. The New York Times described it as a moment when “East Meets West,” highlighting the unique gathering of Indian immigrants, New Yorkers and international visitors celebrating one of the world’s oldest spiritual traditions.

The festival’s longevity also reflects New York City’s unique role as a global crossroads. For fifty years, Ratha-yatra has brought together New Yorkers and international visitors of all faith backgrounds in a joyful public celebration.

A special highlight of the 2026 Golden Jubilee will be the return of the original chariot of Srimati Subhadra Devi—the very cart upon which Srila Prabhupada rode during the inaugural 1976 procession—which has been lovingly restored and will once again travel down Fifth Avenue.

“The 50th anniversary of New York Ratha-yatra is much more than a celebration of a festival—it is a celebration of a vision,” said Hansarupa Dasa, President of ISKCON New York City. “When Srila Prabhupada brought Lord Jagannatha down Fifth Avenue in 1976, he demonstrated that New York City could become a meeting place for the world’s spiritual and cultural traditions. Fifty years later, we are honored to celebrate the continuation of that legacy by welcoming people of every background to experience the joy of kirtan, the spirit of community and the timeless wisdom of bhakti-yoga.”

Organizers also plan to distribute more than 20,000 plates of complimentary prasadam, sanctified vegetarian cuisine, continuing a tradition of hospitality and service that has defined the festival for five decades.

The festival also serves as a tribute to the vision of Srila Prabhupada, who arrived in New York in 1965 at the age of 69 and founded ISKCON the following year. From humble beginnings in a Lower East Side storefront, ISKCON has grown into a global spiritual movement with hundreds of temples, educational institutions, farms, restaurants and cultural centers serving millions worldwide.

“Few events better illustrate Srila Prabhupada’s impact on New York and the world than the annual Ratha-yatra Festival,” said Pancharatna Dasa, ISKCON NYC Communications Coordinator. “Today, this festival is part of a global tradition celebrated in hundreds of cities across six continents. As we commemorate both the 50th anniversary of New York Ratha-yatra and the 60th anniversary of ISKCON, we are reminded that Srila Prabhupada’s message of spiritual unity continues to resonate across cultures, generations and national boundaries.”
