Yorkshire firms partner to develop leaders of the future

York-based learning and development firm, Pro-Development (UK) Ltd, has helped a rapidly growing Cleckheaton Health and Beauty manufacturing company take its business to the next level by supporting the development of its future leaders.

Orean, an expert in premium skin and hair care products, has recently expanded into the US with the opening of its new $5m manufacturing facility. The success of the US site has opened opportunities for international roles and further career progression opportunities in the UK. With this growth, Orean identified the need for a robust leadership framework to be put in place to ensure a strong pipeline of up-and-coming leaders to support the business as its focus widens.

The partnership between Pro-Development and Orean began during lockdown when Michelle Mook, MD at Pro-Development, met Orean’s MD, Dan Williams, through the Strategic Growth Programme she was supporting – a programme set up to help business resilience. Coaching with Orean’s senior leadership team identified that they had a strong vision for growth. Orean recognised that to successfully achieve this vision in such a dynamic market, they needed to encourage and harness energy and passion from within.

To help overcome challenges relating to talent pipeline and leadership development, Pro-Development created a bespoke programme to support and upskill potential future leaders and provide a clear career path to encourage staff engagement. The year-long Future Leaders programme involved 20 Orean employees – including production shift managers, team leaders, lab technicians and manufacturing managers – providing practical learning and team building.

It was recognised that investing in these people was a key priority in Orean’s growth strategy. Providing them with skills and empowering them to make robust decisions would create the driving force to take Orean to the next level of growth and building confidence would allow them to put solutions in place to overcome the challenges identified.

Says Verity Ridley, HR manager at Orean, “As a business we had previously struggled to develop the skills of our team leaders due to pressures associated with rapid and continuous growth. The leadership programme has been a journey of learning and self-awareness for our business leaders. We have since promoted internally, made positive fundamental changes to processes and roles, experienced an increase in engagement and seen individuals flourish beyond anyone’s expectations.”

Says Will Matthews, learning and development consultant at Pro-Development, “There have been many success stories at Orean because of this investment in their people. There is a renewed sense of energy and positivity amongst the groups who have built solid relationships across the business. Orean is already reaping the rewards for making time to understand and invest in people to help them stay engaged and add value to the organisation. The sincere passion for people development shines through in Orean’s culture and we are excited to be taking another cohort of future leaders through the same programme, next year.”
