As the UK gears up for the General Election, VinciWorks, a leading compliance eLearning and software specialist, has polled 134 compliance officers, capturing the pulse of business leaders and professionals on key issues such as data protection, the Equality Act, and whistleblower policies. The survey offers a glimpse into the priorities and expectations for the next government.

Data Protection: A Call for Closer EU Alignment

With 45% of respondents advocating for maintaining closer alignment with EU GDPR, it’s clear that a significant portion of the business community values the rigorous standards set by the EU. Only 14% support the revival of the Conservative’s controversial Data Protection and Digital Information (DPDI) Bill which would derogate significantly from EU standards, while 3% oppose its revival and 11% would prefer a watered-down version. Notably, 27% of participants remain uncertain, highlighting the need for clearer guidance and policies from the incoming government.

“Businesses are demanding stability and clarity in data protection laws as the AI revolution heats up,” said Nick Henderson-Mayo, Director of Learning and Content at VinciWorks. “Maintaining close alignment with evolving EU standards on GDPR and AI is not just a preference but a necessity. Labour should think twice about reviving the DPDI Bill if they want to keep business leaders on side.”

Equality Act: A Moderate Priority for Many

The survey indicates mixed feelings about revisiting the Equality Act which both main parties have pledged to do. While 26% believe it should be a high priority, only 4% view it as the top priority. A majority lean towards a moderate (39%) or low priority (18%), reflecting a cautious approach towards overhauling existing regulations.

“There’s a recognition of the importance of the Equality Act, but businesses are cautious about extensive changes,” noted Henderson-Mayo. “The priority should be on enforcing existing laws effectively rather than embarking on significant reforms that could create more uncertainty and disruption without delivering substantial benefits.”

Whistleblower Policies: Support for Financial Rewards

A notable 46% of respondents are in favour of offering financial rewards to whistleblowers, contrasting with 29% who oppose it and 25% who remain unsure. This indicates a growing acknowledgement of the role financial incentives could play in encouraging ethical practices and uncovering wrongdoing.

“Whistleblowers are the unsung heroes of corporate integrity,” says Nick Henderson-Mayo. “Financial rewards are more than just incentives; they are vital tools for promoting a culture of transparency and accountability. It’s telling that many in the corporate compliance community favour Labour’s plans for financial incentives, and a new government should swiftly bring this in.”

The recent insights from VinciWorks highlight the critical areas of concern for businesses as the UK heads into the General Election. These findings point to data protection, equality, and whistleblower policies as top compliance priorities, and the stance of the next government on these issues will be crucial in shaping a secure and equitable business environment.
