Leeds-based BME housing association Unity Homes and Enterprise has hosted a celebratory event for more than 120 local residents and businesses in Chapeltown as part of the Eden Project’s ‘Big Lunch’ initiative for communities across the country.
The gathering was originally due to be held in the car park at Leeds Media Centre – one of three business locations managed by UE, Unity’s not-for-profit subsidiary company – but torrential rain resulted in a last-minute move to the nearby Leeds Caribbean and African Centre.
Alongside Unity housing tenants and other residents, local organisations in attendance included Leeds Federated, Feel Good Factor, Leeds Involving People, Advonet, Chapeltown Neighbourhood Forum, Yorkshire Dance and Leeds Health Awareness.
Running since 2009, ’The Big Lunch’ is the UK’s annual get together for neighbours and communities when millions of people share friendship, food and fun. Last year, over 10 million people took part in the initiative.
Rhiannon Olliver, Unity Homes and Enterprise Customer and Community Lead, said: “All of the organisations that came along showcased their services on offer in the Chapeltown area.
“Several referrals were made and Leeds Health Awareness took people’s blood pressure for a quick lunchtime MOT.
“Local residents brought and shared dishes for a collective lunch featuring food from many different cultures.
“DJ Eddie from Sensation Barbers also played tunes, adding another level to the celebratory vibes.”
Cedric Boston, Unity Homes and Enterprise Chief Executive, said: “It was a wonderfully upbeat occasion with the best of everyday life in Chapeltown on show.
“We are especially grateful to Leeds Caribbean and African Centre for making their facilities available to us at short notice.
“New friendships and contacts were made, as people came together to share a love of food and community.”
