New research from Celebration of Life explores why more people are choosing direct cremation — and how the industry is evolving
The way we say goodbye is changing. New research from Celebration of Life has revealed the top reasons why more people are choosing direct cremation — with simplicity, peace of mind, and affordability emerging as key themes.
For many, the motivation is emotional rather than financial. People are increasingly drawn to the idea of a private, stress-free farewell, allowing loved ones to mark their passing in a way that feels authentic.
“I attended a friend’s funeral recently and I don’t want a circus for my own,”

The research also found that those who have recently lost someone are among the most proactive about making their own arrangements. Having navigated a traditional funeral themselves, they want to spare their next of kin from similar pressures in the future.
And while cost remains part of the conversation, Celebration of Life says most customers are looking for choice and clarity, not the cheapest option.
“We’re hearing from more and more people who want control over how they’re remembered,” said Peter Shuttleworth, General Manager of Celebration of Life.
“We understand that direct cremation may not be for everyone, but for those who choose it, we make sure it’s done with the same care, dignity and respect that every family deserves.”
An Industry in the Spotlight
The direct cremation sector, which now accounts for over 20% of all funerals in the UK, has recently found itself in the headlines again following reports of large-scale business activity and ownership changes within the industry.
While some commentators have raised questions about the pace of commercialisation, Celebration of Life says this renewed attention is an opportunity to remind families that quality and compassion must always come first.
“We understand that some people have concerns about how the industry is evolving,” Peter Shuttleworth added.
“That’s why we’re committed to keeping our focus where it should be — on the families we serve and the care we provide.”
The company believes the shift toward simpler farewells reflects a broader movement in modern society — one where people want to celebrate life in ways that feel personal, genuine, and free from unnecessary stress.
