DERBY, UK – 11 February 2026

With water bills increasing across the UK this year, building specialists are urging households to carry out a simple “silent leak test” to check for hidden water waste, particularly from toilets and outside taps.

According to experts at Essential Site Skills, many properties lose water daily through slow, unnoticed leaks that rarely make noise or leave visible signs. Even a slow leak can waste significant amounts of water over time, often without homeowners noticing.

Experts say spring is a particularly important time to check outside taps and hose connections after winter weather can damage seals.

Catherine Storer, Director at Essential Site Skills, said:
“Unlike heating, you can’t feel water escaping. A small toilet leak or outside tap drip may not seem urgent, but over weeks and months it can quietly increase usage. Most people don’t realise there’s a problem until the bill arrives.”

How to carry out the 30-minute silent leak test

Experts recommend a simple five-step check:

  1. Turn off all taps and water-using appliances.
  2. Avoid flushing toilets or running showers.
  3. Check your water meter reading and note it down.
  4. Wait around 30 minutes without using any water.
  5. Recheck the meter.

“If the reading changes despite no water being used, it may indicate a hidden leak somewhere in the system,” Storer explained. “It’s a straightforward way to spot an issue before it becomes expensive.”

The toilet dye test most households miss

Specialists say toilets are one of the most common sources of silent water loss.

To check:

  • Add a few drops of food colouring into the toilet cistern.
  • Do not flush.
  • Wait 10–15 minutes.

“If colour appears in the bowl without flushing, the seal may be leaking,” Storer said. “It’s a simple test that takes minutes and can reveal ongoing water waste.”

The most common hidden culprits

Specialists say the most frequent causes of unnoticed water waste include:

  • Toilets with slow-running or faulty cistern valves
  • Worn flush seals allowing constant trickle into the bowl
  • Dripping outside taps
  • Hosepipe connectors that aren’t fully sealed
  • Garden taps left under slight pressure
  • Hairline cracks in external pipework
  • Overflow pipes that discharge intermittently

“Outside taps are often forgotten about,” Storer added. “Especially after winter, seals can degrade and cause steady drips that aren’t obvious. Because they’re outdoors, people don’t always notice the loss.”

Why this matters now

With cost-of-living pressures continuing, experts say better understanding of basic building systems can help households avoid unnecessary waste.

“Most leaks aren’t dramatic bursts,” said Storer. “They’re small, persistent and easy to miss. But over time, that steady loss adds up. A simple check once or twice a year can help households avoid paying for water they’re not even using.”
