The Green Block (TGB) has secured a prestigious five-year contract from Transport for London (TfL) to deliver waste management services across the Elizabeth line, marking one of the most significant contract wins in the company’s history and further cementing its position as a leading innovator in the transport waste management sector.
The contract spans 27 stations and will see the deployment of two globally patented Mobile Segregation Units (MSUs) positioned to support both eastern and western sections of the line. Operating from Gidea Park in the east and the Reading corridor in the west at Taplow, the units will form a hub-and-spoke model, enabling waste to be consolidated and processed efficiently across the estate.
Expected to handle approximately 30 tonnes of waste per railway period, the system introduces a fundamentally different approach to managing waste within a complex, multi-tenant environment. Acting as mobile, on-site material recovery facilities, the MSUs enable mixed waste to be segregated and processed within the operational footprint, significantly improving recycling performance while reducing reliance on off-site sorting.
This capability is enhanced by TGB’s Plaza platform, which provides real-time visibility of waste streams, enabling operators to monitor performance, track waste producers and support compliance with evolving regulatory requirements, including Simpler Recycling and digital waste tracking.
The Elizabeth line presents a highly complex operational environment characterised by high passenger volumes, multiple stakeholders and limited space. Traditional waste systems often struggle to deliver consistent outcomes under these conditions. By contrast, TGB’s integrated model combines infrastructure, data and operational expertise to deliver both efficiency and transparency.
