Angelica Solutions warns airports are collision hotspots, with twice the national average collision risk around major UK airports
As airports prepare for a travel surge in December with the busiest days for airport travel predicted to be from (Friday) 20 to (Sunday) 22 December[i] with both Christmas Day and the start of Hanukkah coinciding on the same date this year, Angelica Solutions warns motorists and other road users to be extra vigilant on the roads this festive season.
Analysis by Angelica Solutions shows roads surrounding major airports are twice as risky as the national average. This risk amplifies the usual stress of festive travel and costs, particularly for those heading home for the holidays or embarking on a Christmas getaway.
There are about 1.7 injury-causing collisions per 1,000 people annually. However, individuals in proximity to major airports face double that risk. With Heathrow Airport leading the list of collision hotspots, the likelihood of collision escalates to 4.2 injury-causing incidents per 1,000 people each year, equating to 2.4 times the national average risk.
Top airport collision hotspots
- Heathrow Airport: 4.2 collisions per 1,000 people (2.4 times the national risk)
- London Stansted: 3.8 collisions per 1,000 people (2.2 times)
- Birmingham: 3.5 collisions per 1,000 people (2.1 times)
- London Luton: 3.1 collisions per 1,000 people (1.8 times)
- Bristol: 3.0 collisions per 1,000 people (1.7 times)
- London Gatwick: 2.5 collisions per 1,000 people (1.5 times)
- Manchester: 2.0 collisions per 1,000 people (1.2 times)
Sarah Vaughan, Director of Angelica Solutions, comments, “The festive season brings an influx of travellers, significantly increasing traffic around airports. Motorists heading to these airports should be keenly aware of the heightened risk of collisions during this period. Safety should be at the forefront for both drivers and traffic management to mitigate risks and ensure everyone gets home safely for the holidays.”
Driving during the Christmas rush not only heightens the risk of a collision but can also lead to unforeseen expenses if deemed at fault. The typical collision could set motorists back about £540 due to excess payments and increased premiums upon renewal – an additional spend no one wants, especially during the costly Christmas season”.
“Road safety needs to be a priority”, continues Vaughan. “By engaging airport transport providers, hire car companies, and taxi services, we can enhance traveller safety through increased awareness and targeted safety strategies. Actions as simple as leaving more time can significantly reduce incidents, ensuring more of us reach our destinations safely to celebrate this joyous season with loved ones.”
