SSEN Transmission invests in mobile EAM solution

As part of its five-year RIIO T2 business plan and Network for Net Zero objectives

SSEN Transmission has appointed class-leading Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) specialist, Peacock Engineering Ltd, to deliver a mobile solution to further enhance its EAM strategy in line with its five-year RIIO T2 business plan and its network for net zero objectives.

In 2021 SSEN Transmission laid out ambitious plans to its stakeholders and Ofgem, the government regulator for the electricity and downstream natural gas markets in Great Britain. The plans highlighted how the electricity network developer and operator will be streamlining and improving its operations, while providing openness and transparency in its performance.

As part of its plans, SSEN Transmission highlighted five key aims to providing a low carbon future, developing, building, maintaining, and operating a network for net zero, while being aligned with the regulator’s network price controls. These included building a network with the capacity and flexibility to accommodate the 10GW of renewable electricity that will power 10 million homes across the UK, aims for 100% transmission network reliability for homes and businesses, plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by one third by 2026, as well as every connection to be delivered on time, on budget and to its customers’ satisfaction, and an investment of £100 million in efficiency savings from innovation.

Working with IBM Platinum Business Partner Peacock Engineering, in 2022, SSEN Transmission continued to deliver on its commitment to invest in efficiency saving solutions and technologies with the implementation of IBM Maximo. IBM Maximo is the world’s leading asset management solution used by utility, logistics, and facilities management businesses around the world.

Looking to further enhance its EAM programme, the electricity network provider and operator is now working with Peacock Engineering to deliver a new mobile work order management and maintenance solution for the field, Fingertip.

Peacock Engineering is part of global asset management company BPD Zenith and is a specialist in delivering innovative technologies that help large and medium scale organisations better deliver against their asset management strategies, helping to improve first time fix rates and increase the life expectancy of assets. Its Fingertip mobile application takes EAM to the field and enables users to better capture data, improve the efficiency of workflows, create a real time asset management register, as well as helping to remove inefficient processes such as paper-based work order management.

As part of the delivery, SSEN Transmission will also be utilising a new GIS mapping platform through Fingertip allowing it to create and plot streamlined workflows for its 1000’s strong engineer workforce.

Iain Dougan, Head of IT Operations, SSEN Transmission, said: “As part of our RIIO-T2 business plan commitments and our aim to deliver a network for net zero we’re pleased to be continuing our work with Peacock Engineering with the implementation of the latest generation of its Fingertip mobile technology.

“Fingertip will enable our engineers to carry out their work more efficiently across the entirety of our network, ensuring the maintenance of critical infrastructure, including powerlines and substations, is carried out on time, on budget and to our customers’ satisfaction.”

Tanya Pierre-James, Sales Account Executive, Peacock Engineering, said: “Having worked closely with the team at SSEN Transmission since 2021 we’re delighted to be adding our Fingertip mobile application to their existing EAM solution.”

Tanya added: “Fingertip is one of the leading mobile solutions in the world. Extending asset management to the field, it provides a real time link to IBM Maximo, ensuring data is always current. As well as helping to streamline workflows and work orders, it helps with the creation of full audit trails and with the management of inventory and stock, and delivers better asset visibility across any site and in any location.”
