“Sisterhood” is a major exhibition which marks the 18th anniversary of South London Women Artists and celebrates International Women’s Day for the entire month of March. It features the rich and diverse work of 76 local women artists who come together in the spirit of collective endeavour.
South London Women Artists (SLWA) was created by artist Leonie Cronin and local art collector Jenny Sweeney in 2008 as a non-profit association to support and showcase local artists. The group has grown over the years and embraces all kinds of practice, genres and mediums. The “Sisterhood” exhibition brings together a body of work including painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media, textiles, printmaking and ceramics. It has been led by a number of female artists over the years, with Beth Worth currently chairing the organisation.
The concept of the show belongs to portrait artist Julie Bennett, whose vision centres on collective strength and the power of women creating alongside one another, exploring themes that range from identity and belonging to activism, heritage, memory and personal transformation.
Reflecting on the anniversary, Bennett says:
“This exhibition celebrates 18 years of South London Women Artists. It’s going to be a fantastic show, with the majority of our members taking part, something we haven’t seen on this scale for years. It feels particularly meaningful to have it hosted by Lambeth Archives, a space that preserves our local history, as we mark this important chapter in SLWA’s story.”
While each artist brings her own distinct perspective, the exhibition is unified by a spirit of sisterhood, shared space and what happens when creative voices gather, support one another and amplify each other’s stories.
Among the exhibiting artists are Paola Minekov and Natalia Giacomino from Creations Atelier, as well as Michelle Baharier, Rosie Arnoldi, Dil Vahidova and Carry Hornby. Their participation further underscores the collaborative ethos of the exhibition and highlights the interconnected creative communities thriving across South London.

In a cultural landscape where women artists continue to advocate for equitable representation, SLWA’s sustained presence is itself a statement. Eighteen years of grassroots organisation is no small achievement, and this anniversary exhibition feels both celebratory and purposeful.
