As loneliness reaches its annual winter peak, a new intergenerational anthem is calling the nation to come together through the power of song.
With 1 in 4 people in the UK experiencing loneliness, a figure that rises during the darker, colder months, Intergenerational England (IE) and Intergenerational Music Making (IMM) have released “So Much More”, a song designed to unite generations, spark conversation, and strengthen community connection this Christmas.
Premiered earlier this year at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, where the audience themselves transformed into a choir, the anthem is now being shared nationwide as a tool for connection, belonging and solidarity.
“So Much More” sits at the heart of the Access All Ages (AAA) Music Pack, a new resource created to help schools, youth groups, care homes, choirs, workplaces and community organisations bring generations together through music-led activities.
The pack includes a step-by-step guide to teaching the song, warm-ups, printable activities and conversation starters, making intergenerational engagement accessible, inclusive and easy to deliver in any setting.
Despite strong evidence showing that music can reduce loneliness, boost wellbeing and bridge generational divides, it remains significantly underused across education, care and community services. IE and IMM are working to change that.
The UK is now more age-segregated than ever, with fewer opportunities for young and older people to interact. This separation is contributing to rising loneliness, poorer mental health and a decline in community cohesion.
But the evidence for intergenerational connection is clear:
- 86% of adults say intergenerational contact reduces ageism
- 81% say it reduces loneliness and improves wellbeing
The message is simple: connection heals and music makes connection possible.
This December, IE and IMM are inviting communities across the UK to take part in a free Christmas Sing-Along of “So Much More”, taking place on 19 December at 11am.
No experience is needed, just a willingness to share a moment of joy, warmth and togetherness.
“At a time when divisions can feel deep, this anthem reminds us that connection is always possible no matter our age or background. Music unites us, heals us, and strengthens us when we share it together.” Emily Abbott, Co-Founder, Intergenerational England
“‘So Much More’ calls for creativity to be placed back at the heart of our communities. Music isn’t an add-on, it’s how we connect, how we heal, and how we imagine a better future.” Charlotte Miller, Founder, Intergenerational Music Making
