Otto Gross, a sophomore at Bates College from Rumson, New Jersey, has completed an extraordinary 24-hour pull-up challenge, performing 6,351 pull-ups and raising $5,000 in the process.
Gross, who is majoring in a pre-med course of study at Bates College, took on the challenge as a college student determined to see how far discipline, preparation, and perseverance could take him.
Over the course of 24 hours, Gross completed thousands of pull-ups while battling fatigue and pushing through the physical and mental demands of the challenge. His total places him among the top 10 performances associated with the world-record pursuit, according to the challenge’s reported results.
What makes Gross’s accomplishment particularly notable is that he is not a professional athlete. He is a college sophomore pursuing his education and a future in medicine who decided to take on one of the most demanding endurance challenges imaginable.
“I wanted to find out what I was capable of and see how far I could push myself,” said Gross. “The hardest part wasn’t just doing the pull-ups—it was continuing when I was exhausted and every part of me wanted to stop. Knowing that people were supporting the effort and that we were raising money made it even more meaningful.”
The challenge also served a charitable purpose, generating $5,000 in donations and demonstrating that a personal athletic goal can be used to bring people together around a larger cause.
Gross’s accomplishment is a testament to the power of consistency and determination. As he continues his sophomore year at Bates College and works toward a future in medicine, his 24-hour challenge has already given him a memorable lesson in endurance: extraordinary results can come from an ordinary person willing to keep going.
