Revered wildlife artist Jackie Morris to host live painting session at The Sill this weekend

Acclaimed artist Jackie Morris, well-known for her work on the best-selling books The Lost Words and The Lost Spells in partnership with writer Robert Macfarlane, is hosting two live painting sessions at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre on Saturday 27th of May.

The sessions are part of a day of activities to celebrate the success of The Lost Spells: Listening to a Landscape of Voices exhibition and programme which has been extended until Sunday 18th of June.

The exhibition and programme launched during the summer of 2022 and the exhibition features Jackie’s paintings of British animals, birds, trees and flowers, and Robert’s poetry from The Lost Spells.

The exhibition was produced by Northumberland National Park (supported by funding from Tyne and Wear Community Foundation), and features an engagement programme which runs alongside, that offers creative workshops, Ranger activities, walks and talks, and a learning and education programme to support people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to explore the natural world.

Saturday’s live painting sessions will give visitors the rare opportunity to observe Jackie’s artistic process and gain insight into her creative approach.

Jackie Morris said: “I was beyond delighted when The Sill commissioned the exhibition for The Lost Spells. Northumberland is a most amazing place, beautiful and rich in wildness. It will be a joy to paint in The Sill and I really welcome the chance to talk with people, read from the books, conjure creatures and work with paint and ink, inspired by the surroundings.”

On Saturday, visitors can drop-in and take a tour of the exhibition. Jackie will be hosting two live painting sessions at 10am and 2pm. The sessions will be followed by a book signing with Jackie in The Sill’s shop from 3pm to 4:30pm.

The Sill is also hosting Wands and Whispers – Lost Spells Family Fun sessions on Saturday at 10.30am and 1pm. They involve Ranger Tess taking participants on an outdoor adventure to discover the nature surrounding The Sill and collecting wild materials to make a wand then get busy conjuring up some special spells to whisper.

Sarah Burn, Head of Engagement at Northumberland National Park Authority, said: “It has been fantastic to experience people’s reaction to Jackie and Robert’s work. Through the Lost Spells: Listening to a Landscape of Voices exhibition and programme, we have connected people of different ages, abilities and backgrounds with nature, deepening understanding around biodiversity loss, climate change and the natural world around us.

“Together, Jackie and Robert are reigniting people’s passion for wildlife, nature and landscape and we are extremely honoured to welcome Jackie back to The Sill this weekend to join us in celebrating the success of the exhibition in Northumberland before it leaves us in June.

“As well as being a celebration of their spellbinding work, the exhibition and programme has helped people to learn more about Britain’s native species, many of which can be found in Northumberland National Park, and how together we can protect them for future generations to enjoy.”

The Lost Spells is a touring exhibition of Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris’s bestselling book of the same name, which celebrates the beauty and diversity of the natural world. The immersive exhibition features Jackie’s original artwork, soundscapes and interactive experiences.

The Lost Spells: Listening to a Landscape of Voices exhibition is open until the 18 June. The exhibition will then be touring other designated landscapes in the UK, starting with North York Moors National Park at Danby Lodge from 16th July to 10th September 2023.
