Marvel Comics Bullpen Archive to Hit the Auction Block in Tallahassee
Affiliated Auctions will offer a newly uncovered archive of original Marvel Comics production art, mechanical master titles, and bullpen artifacts from the late 1970s and 1980s at their June 3rd auction. Sourced from the personal files of veteran Marvel production artist and letterer Brad K. Joyce, this historic collection offers a rare look into the manual, pre-digital “bullpen” era of comic book creation.
Before digital design, every cover, splash page, and logo was hand-assembled using Bristol board, X-Acto knives, and photographic photostats. This auction showcases the physical blueprints of Bronze Age comic history.
Featured Marvel Archive Highlights:
• The Uncanny X-Men #134 Production Group: An original dialogue balloon reading “I am Phoenix!” with visible white-out corrections from the legendary 1980 “Dark Phoenix Saga,” paired with a photostat “Next: Dark Phoenix” teaser.
• The Mighty Avengers Origin Splash Mechanical: The master production layout featuring the iconic “And there came a day…” introductory statement, complete with handwritten editorial notes.
• The Werewolf by Night Archive: A complete development file for Marvel Comics Presents #54–59, including Len Kaminski’s original script, Terry Kavanagh’s ink revisions, and hand-drawn overlay pages.
• The Black Panther Jungle Action Master: A two-piece mechanical master featuring the classic introductory narrative for T’Challa, Prince of Wakanda.
• Unreleased X-Men History: A unique, unpublished character logo concept for Storm.
The collection also includes workspace artifacts, inter-office editorial notes, and hand-drawn doodles by late Marvel letterer Jack Morelli across production boards for the original 1977 Star Wars, The Defenders, Ghost Rider, Secret Wars II, and The Eternals.
Antiquities, Militaria & Vintage Toys
The event also features rare Americana, military history, pre-Columbian sculptural artifacts, Civil War memorabilia, early industrial patents, and an extensive historical collection of Victorian-era tabletop parlor games and mechanical action toys.
