Cmgb brings independent oversight to marketing architecture, giving boards, auditors, and governance professionals a credential of their own; launch completes MAI’s full formal credential structure
The Marketing Architecture Institute (MAI) today announced the launch of the Certified Marketing Governance Board (CMGB) credential, completing the formal credential structure MAI set out to build. With CMGB now live, MAI offers a complete pathway covering every vantage point the discipline needs: practitioners who diagnose marketing systems, design and govern them, and lead them at enterprise scale, and now, independent professionals who evaluate and attest to that work from outside it.
CMGB is built differently from the credentials that came before it.
Certified Marketing Architecture Associate (CMAA), Certified Marketing Architect (CMA), and Certified Marketing Architecture Officer (CMAO) form a cumulative practitioner ladder, each validating a deeper level of hands-on responsibility for marketing systems. CMGB sits beside that ladder, not above it. It carries no CMAA, CMA, or CMAO prerequisite, because the judgment it validates isn’t practitioner judgment at all. It’s the judgment of someone evaluating a marketing system from the outside, the way a board member, auditor, or governance professional evaluates any other high-stakes function inside an organization.
That distinction matters because the role CMGB validates has effectively not existed until now. Boards routinely have members who can read financial statements with real fluency, people a company depends on to ask the right questions and catch problems before they become crises. Almost no board has an equivalent for marketing, despite marketing systems now touching data infrastructure, customer trust, brand risk, and increasingly consequential AI-driven decisioning. CMGB gives organizations a way to put someone in that oversight seat who has actually been assessed on the judgment it requires.
CMGB candidates are evaluated across five competency domains: discipline and governance context; evaluating architectural reporting; governing architectural investment; attestation evaluation and conformance oversight; and professional conduct. Assessment combines a written exam with a scenario-based take-home assessment and a panel review, and the credential carries a three-year maintenance cycle, reinforcing that governance competence has to be maintained, not simply proven once.
“Every credential we’ve built before this one validated someone doing the work. CMGB validates someone watching the work, and asking whether it should be trusted,” said Bray Brockbank, founder & CEO of the Marketing Architecture Institute.
“Boards and executives have had almost no way to know whether the marketing architecture underneath their organization actually holds up, because there’s been no one credentialed to tell them. CMGB closes that gap. It’s the piece that makes everything else we’ve built actually accountable to someone outside the room where the decisions get made.”
With CMGB’s launch, MAI’s full formal structure is now in place: the Marketing Architecture Foundations Certificate as the entry point into the discipline, CMAA, CMA, and CMAO as a cumulative practitioner ladder from diagnosis through enterprise governance, and CMGB as independent oversight alongside all of it.
Taken together, it’s the first time marketing has had anything resembling the professional infrastructure other serious disciplines have relied on for decades: a shared body of knowledge, a credentialing path for practitioners at every level, and a governance credential to hold that work accountable.
MAI has built the full institutional infrastructure to support this launch, including a candidate handbook, a structured prep curriculum, and a validated exam bank specific to CMGB’s five domains. Governance-focused scenario resources are currently being developed to support candidates preparing for the take-home assessment and panel review components.
