World-renowned Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernández — Embajadores del Mariachi — will celebrate Cinco de Mayo for their seventh time in concert at The Madison Center for the Arts. The eight-time, Grammy-nominated ensemble returns to the Valley of the Sun after closing out 2025 celebrating their director’s 50th anniversary as a mariachi musician.
Known as a standard-bearer in the mariachi world, José L. Hernández established Sol de México in 1981 to experiment musically, pushing the boundaries of what was expected for the folk genre.
Sol de México’s show, “Leyendas,” will pay tribute to the six most historically significant voices of mariachi music: Jorge Negrete, Pedro Infante, Miguel Aceves Mejía, José Alfredo Jiménez, Javier Solis and Vicente Fernández. The various medleys dedicated to these icons come from Sol de México’s Grammy-nominated album, “Leyendas de mi Pueblo” (2018, Serenata Records).
“This show brings back so many memories from my childhood,” Hernández said. “My older brothers and father had performed with these artists. They witnessed history right before their eyes.”
