Press Release

A local housebuilder is supporting the next generation of talent in the construction industry.

Redrow East Midlands’ graduate development programme supports people who have recently left university to gain hands-on experience over a two-year period working alongside industry experts.

Among the developer’s success stories is 25-year-old Tariq Murad, from Derby, who is currently in the second year of his graduate scheme at Redrow East Midlands’ Head Office, based in Castle Donington.

Tariq said: “I was attracted to the graduate scheme because of the sheer variety of opportunities available to explore the different areas of the business.

“During my 22 months here, I’ve already had the opportunity to work across land, commercial and technical which has been fantastic and given me an in-depth understanding of how all areas of the business feed into each other. I especially enjoy learning about land acquisition, as it’s such an integral element of the business and the starting point for building all of our homes.

“The next rotation I’m due to undertake is construction, which is exciting. I’m looking forward to learning about the more tangible nature of what we do and being able to put the knowledge I’ve obtained from working in the office into a more practical use out on site. The idea of seeing something start on paper and come to life in its physical form and knowing I’ve been part of that is what attracted me to this industry in the first place!”

Before joining Redrow, Tariq studied planning and development at Nottingham Trent University.

Tariq continued: “My final year of university was quite disrupted by COVID-19, which understandably had a huge impact on myself and the rest of my peers. Despite it being a difficult time, I believe it helped me to develop a greater resilience in unexpected circumstances and to make better use of resources available to me.

“When I left university, I thought I’d finished learning but since joining Redrow I’ve discovered you never stop! Being surrounded by industry experts is a great opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussions which have taught me so much – it’s so important to take advantage of those around you and absorb as much wisdom as you can.”

Michael Coker, Managing Director at Redrow East Midlands, added: “At Redrow, many of our workforce are trainees and we’re delighted to be able to support people on the first step in their career with our graduate scheme here at Redrow East Midlands.

“Tariq is an important and valued member of the team and, as much as we’re teaching him the ropes of the industry, we’re gaining valuable insight from his own experiences and ideas. It’s been wonderful to see Tariq advance in his career and discover more about which areas he enjoys most – the scheme offers a perfect opportunity to try a range of roles and find which you feel best suited to.

“The construction industry is a fast-paced and exciting place to work, where no two days are ever the same, and we’re proud to be making it as accessible and enjoyable as we can for our talented graduates to take that first step!”

Redrow are always looking out for talent committed to excellence, whether experienced in the industry or just starting out. To find out more about careers at Redrow, including graduate roles, please visit our website.
