Local indie author M. L. Parrey, owner of Aber Stoat Books and Aber Stoat Publishing, will introduce the first book vending machine in Carlsbad in the coming months. This new service from her online bookstore aims to bring physical books from independent authors and publishers to high-traffic public spots across North County San Diego.
The machine will stock 200 to 300 curated titles, with an emphasis on indie fiction, fantasy, romance, sci-fi, thriller, and horror. It includes hidden gems from smaller presses, fresh voices from human independent creators, as well as popular romance and fantasy crossovers to attract a broad audience. Vending payments accepted will be cash and credit cards, with 24/7 access planned for future outdoor locations.
Host businesses and venues pay no upfront costs and earn a share of passive revenue from every sale. This provides a low-effort opportunity for local coffee shops, offices, waiting areas, and community hubs to offer something unique while generating extra income and supporting a local indie bookshop.
With fewer physical indie bookstores, especially in North County, access to indie titles remains limited in everyday public spaces. This vending service places diverse, underrepresented books directly where people go, encouraging discovery and supporting independent authors and publishers.
