Leicester psychological service offers a safe space for men to talk about mental health

Purple House Clinic (PHC), a private psychology clinic in Leicester, is offering a new service to support men with their mental health. Dr Ed Rainbow, a newly appointed associate clinician specialising in men’s mental health, will provide a safe environment for males to talk about their feelings and help regain control of their life.

With a background of being a General Practitioner for over 10 years, with a key focus in delivering lifestyle healthcare, Ed will run individualised and tailored support sessions for men who are experiencing difficulties with their psychological well-being and mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, stress or burnout. The one-to-one and group gatherings will be available from 17th February and will provide scientifically proven lifestyle change approaches with the aim to help clients feel understood and empowered again.

“Men’s mental health is an unspoken problem that is affecting so many people up and down the country. It is vital that we break down those stereotypes and make it totally normal for men to ask for help, particularly with suicide being the single largest cause of death for men under the age of 50. This statistic shows the pressing need for mental health support for men and why it is so important to open up rather than turning to alcohol or drugs as a coping mechanism. Social pressures can also mean that men find it harder to discuss feelings of vulnerability, or ask for support, but the evidence is clear that bottling up these feelings can make things worse. There are many options to help you cope, and the sooner you seek help the better,” said Dr Ed Rainbow, a specialist in Men’s Mental Health at the Purple House Clinic Leicester.

“Having experienced my own mental health problems, I recognise that mental health problems are triggered in part by lifestyle factors, which can then be modified and improved with the right help and support. Making simple changes such as talking about your feelings, keeping active and eating well can help you feel better. My new role at the Purple House Clinic will be an invaluable service for so many men across Leicestershire, and I want to encourage those who are struggling with their mental health to take that first step and get in touch,” added Ed.

“Ed’s appointment at the Purple House Clinic Leicester is a real boost to our team of 25 associate clinicians, and with his extensive experience, we are now able to offer expert mental health support to men. Mental health problems are a growing issue in Leicester, with up to 38,000 working-age adults suffering with common mental health problems according to Leicester City Council, and 3,400 suffering from more serious issues. With our range of therapy and specialist assessment services, including adult mental health, child and adolescent mental health, child behaviour/parenting, adopted children and learning difficulties, and now men’s mental health, we can help make a difference to those that need it the most,” said Dr Vicki Edwards, the Director of Purple House Clinic Leicester.
