Two Leeds retail entrepreneurs are preparing for a double celebration in the capital after being named among the UK’s most promising young business leaders.

Hamza Hussain, Managing Director of Abu Bakr Super Market, and his brother Esa Hussain, Commercial Director, have both been selected as winners of the prestigious 30 Under 30 Awards, which recognise the next generation of leaders shaping the future of the UK’s retail industry.

The Leeds-based brothers will travel to London on 8 July to receive their awards at a national ceremony honouring the country’s brightest young retail professionals. The recognition comes after years of growth, innovation and investment at Abu Bakr Super Market, one of Yorkshire’s leading independent retail businesses.

The judging panel recognised the Hussain brothers for their outstanding contribution to independent retail, highlighting their ability to combine commercial success with community impact. Judges were particularly impressed by their leadership in driving business growth, embracing innovation, developing new opportunities within the convenience sector and helping modernise the independent retail experience. Their commitment to investing in people, championing local communities and setting new standards for customer service also helped distinguish them from a highly competitive field of nominees from across the UK.

For Hamza Hussain, the trip to London will be particularly memorable, with the award ceremony taking place just a day after he attends the renowned Grocer Awards in Central London, one of the most respected events in the UK grocery and convenience retail sector.

Speaking about the achievement, Hamza Hussain said: Winning a 30 Under 30 Award is a huge honour and a proud moment for both of us. Retail is a people business, and this recognition reflects the dedication of our entire team, our loyal customers and the support we’ve received from the communities we serve. We are passionate about raising standards, embracing innovation and demonstrating what independent retailers can achieve on a national stage.”

The brothers have become well-known figures within the convenience retail sector, helping drive the continued success of Abu Bakr Super Market through a combination of commercial growth, customer-focused initiatives and investment in modern retailing practices.

Esa Hussain said the recognition highlighted the growing impact of independent retailers across the country.

To be recognised alongside some of the most talented young professionals in UK retail is incredibly rewarding. This award is not just about individual success; it’s about the journey we’ve been on as a family business and the opportunities that exist within independent retail. We are proud to represent Leeds and Yorkshire and look forward to celebrating with fellow winners in London.”

The 30 Under 30 Awards are regarded as one of the industry’s most respected honours for emerging talent, celebrating young professionals who are making a significant impact within retail through leadership, innovation and business excellence.

The brothers’ success reflects the growing influence of Yorkshire-based businesses within the national retail landscape and further strengthens Abu Bakr Super Market’s reputation as a forward-thinking independent retailer.

As they prepare to collect their awards in London this August, Hamza and Esa Hussain are not only celebrating a personal achievement but also showcasing the strength of entrepreneurial talent emerging from Leeds and the wider Yorkshire region.

Notes to editors

The story began in 1987, when Abid Hussain, then just 17, took over the family business. With long hours, determination and a hands-on approach, he laid the groundwork for a brand that would go on to become a well-known name across West Yorkshire. A major turning point arrived in 2002. Abid Food Store rebranded as Abu Bakr Supermarkets, signalling both a new identity and an ambition to scale. That same year, the company opened its Queen’s Road store — its first step beyond the original premises and the start of a steady expansion strategy. Further growth followed in 2004 with the Roundhay Road branch, strengthening the brand’s presence in Leeds and giving more families access to its value-driven offering. A decade later, in 2015, Abu Bakr expanded again with its Beeston store, a move that bolstered its community footprint in another busy part of the city. In 2017, the business invested heavily in expanding its product range. Fresh produce, halal meat counters, and an extensive selection of world foods were introduced — a strategic shift that aligned the brand more closely with the needs of the region’s diverse communities and cemented its reputation for global choice at local prices. The company’s momentum continued into the 2020s. In 2022, Abu Bakr Supermarkets opened its Kirkstall branch, bringing its services to a new and vibrant customer base and widening its reach across Leeds. In 2025, a flagship store opened in Batley, West Yorkshire.
