Just over 12 months since its launch, The KM Foundation is already transforming lives across the UK and India, with projects spanning education, healthcare and community development that are reaching hundreds of thousands of people. Established by businessman and philanthropist Kumar Muthalagappan OBE, the Foundation was created to deliver lasting social impact by investing in initiatives that create opportunity, improve wellbeing and strengthen communities. Its work reflects the values of Kumar’s Chettiar heritage, where success has always carried a responsibility to give back.
In education, the Foundation is helping nurture the next generation of musical talent through its partnership with the London Music Fund, providing fully funded three-year sponsorships for 75 young musicians across London and Birmingham. It has also donated £100,000 to establish the Chalke Schools History Hub, enabling the production of 36 educational films, supporting 98 registered schools and reaching more than 2,500 pupils through the Chalke History Festival.
Healthcare is another cornerstone of the Foundation’s work. Through its partnership with Orbis, funding is enabling 34,000 cataract operations across Tamil Nadu in southern India, while more than 300,000 people have been screened through community eye camps, helping prevent avoidable blindness and improving access to life-changing treatment. Meanwhile, in Punjab, the Foundation has invested £150,000 to fund the state’s first dedicated airway surgery laser, supporting the establishment of the region’s first specialist airway surgery service. The pioneering initiative now serves a population of more than 31 million people, significantly improving access to specialist respiratory care.
Together, these programmes demonstrate how targeted philanthropy can create lasting change across multiple sectors and geographies.
Kumar Muthalagappan OBE said: “The question should never be, ‘How much did I give?’ The question should always be, ‘What changed because I gave it?’
“For me, philanthropy has never been about writing cheques. It’s about creating opportunities, improving lives and investing in projects that continue to make a difference long after the initial donation has been made.
“Whether it’s restoring someone’s sight, helping a gifted young musician realise their potential, improving access to specialist healthcare or inspiring children through education, every initiative is about creating lasting impact. That is the philosophy on which The KM Foundation was built, and it will continue to guide everything we do.”
Although each project is different, they share a common purpose: delivering practical, measurable outcomes that improve lives and leave stronger communities for future generations. As the Foundation continues to grow, it remains committed to supporting initiatives where investment creates long-term, sustainable impact—ensuring that every contribution delivers benefits far beyond the original gift.
