EDITORIAL INSIGHT: Context, industry insight and market perspectives of this news story

insurd’s move to introduce temporary taxi insurance, arranged in partnership with GoShorty, expands the options available to licensed taxi and private hire drivers who do not require a full annual policy. This development responds to the growing need for more flexible insurance solutions, particularly as working patterns in the taxi sector become increasingly varied and short-term or part-time driving becomes more common.

For drivers who experience seasonal fluctuations, are new to the trade, or need cover while switching providers, short-term hire and reward insurance can help manage costs without long-term commitment. The ability to switch between passenger and delivery work under the same policy may also appeal to drivers seeking to maximise earning opportunities during quieter periods. With Department for Transport data showing hundreds of thousands of licensed vehicles in England alone, the potential audience for this type of product is significant, especially as the sector continues to adapt to changing demands and working habits.

Flint, Wales - August 11 2026

FCA-regulated broker insurd adds temporary taxi insurance to its specialist vehicle insurance offering, giving licensed taxi and private hire drivers access to comprehensive short-term hire and reward cover from 7 to 28 days.

insurd, the North Wales-based digital insurance broker with over 50 years of heritage in arranging insurance for UK customers, has today announced the addition of temporary taxi insurance to its growing suite of short-term vehicle cover, arranged in partnership with GoShorty — one of the UK’s leading temporary vehicle insurance providers.

insurd has long arranged annual taxi insurance for licensed drivers across the UK, and that remains central to what the business offers. The addition of temporary taxi insurance through GoShorty addresses a distinct and growing need: short-term, standalone hire and reward cover for the situations where a 12-month policy is not the right fit.

With over 313,000 licensed taxi and private hire vehicles operating in England alone, according to Department for Transport figures, the taxi sector has seen a significant shift in how drivers approach their working patterns. Seasonal peaks, part-time shifts, drivers entering the trade for the first time, and those switching between annual providers all represent situations where a rigid 12-month policy creates an unnecessary financial barrier. Temporary taxi insurance provides a pay-as-you-go alternative — fully comprehensive hire and reward cover for a fixed period of 7, 14, 21 or 28 days, with no long-term commitment and no impact on an existing annual policy’s no-claims bonus.

Notably, the policy covers both private hire and public hire operations under the same cover, and also extends to food and parcel delivery for hire and reward — allowing drivers to switch between passenger work and courier deliveries during quieter periods without needing a separate policy. No black box or dashcam installation is required as a condition of cover.

“For most taxi and private hire drivers, an annual policy is absolutely the right solution, and arranging that specialist cover has always been a core part of what we do at insurd. But we also recognise that the way people work in the taxi trade has changed — seasonal driving, first-time drivers finding their feet, or part-time work alongside another job all create situations where a 12-month policy just doesn’t suit. That’s the gap temporary taxi insurance fills perfectly. We’re delighted to be working with GoShorty on this — they’re the specialists in short-term cover and their product is exactly what the market needs. Drivers can now get fully compliant, comprehensive hire and reward cover in under two minutes, sitting alongside the annual policies we’ve always provided.”

Craig Shaw, Director, insurd

The temporary taxi insurance product is available to licensed drivers aged 30 to 74 for 7, 14 and 21-day policies, with a broader age range of 23 to 75 accepted for the 28-day option. Drivers must hold a valid taxi badge issued by a recognised local authority, with the vehicle plated by the same authority. The policy covers vehicles up to the value of £50,000 with up to seven passengers, and considers drivers with up to nine penalty points and up to two claims in the last three years. The policy currently covers the majority of local authority licensing areas in England, Wales and Scotland; PCO (London) regions are not covered at this time.

“We’re excited to work with insurd to bring more flexibility to taxi and private hire drivers across the UK. We know that not every driver wants, or needs, to commit to an annual policy, so this partnership is all about giving drivers more choice, more control and access to comprehensive short-term cover that fits around the way they live and work.”

Chris Evitt, Director of Capacity and Distribution, GoShorty

The launch of temporary taxi insurance adds to insurd’s expanding range of short-term vehicle cover, which already includes temporary car, van, motorhome, campervan and impound release insurance — all arranged through GoShorty. Across the full range, customers can complete a quote and purchase cover in under two minutes via insurd’s website, with policy documents delivered immediately to their inbox.
