Gogetop Marketing has released an updated framework for international brands navigating China's digital landscape, focusing on the roles of RedNote and WeChat. The framework addresses how brands can be discovered and contacted by Chinese consumers, given recent changes in platform usage and restrictions. It emphasises using RedNote for brand discovery and WeChat for official business information and customer communication, ensuring compliance with platform rules.

Press Release

LONDON, UK - July 15, 2026

Gogetop Marketing has published an updated China digital discovery framework for international brands following recent growth in Weixin search, the expansion of Tencent’s Yuanbao AI assistant and continued restrictions on off-platform contact sharing within RedNote.

The London-based cross-border marketing agency says the changes are affecting how overseas companies are discovered, verified and contacted by Chinese consumers.

The framework sets out separate roles for RedNote, also known as Xiaohongshu or Little Red Book, and WeChat. RedNote is positioned primarily as a platform for consumer discovery, search, recommendations and brand evaluation. WeChat is positioned as an official environment for company information, customer enquiries, service communication and longer-term relationship management.

Tencent reported that Weixin Search query volume increased by more than 25 per cent year on year during the first quarter of 2026. The company said the increase was supported by large-language-model ranking and wider AI search coverage. Tencent also reported that time spent on Weixin Video Accounts increased by more than 20 per cent during the same period.

At the end of 2025, Weixin and WeChat had a combined 1.418 billion monthly active accounts.

“The way Chinese consumers discover brands is becoming more fragmented,” said Ms Micky Liu, China Marketing Manager at Gogetop Marketing. “Consumers may encounter a company through a RedNote search, a video, a Weixin search result or an AI-generated answer before they ever visit an official website or speak to a representative.”

RedNote remains important for discovery

RedNote is widely used by Chinese consumers to research products, destinations, education providers, property, beauty services and professional organisations.

Consumers may review search results, user experiences, comments and comparison content before deciding whether a company appears credible.

However, Gogetop Marketing says brands must distinguish between content discovery and direct lead collection.

RedNote restricts the use of telephone numbers, WeChat IDs, external website addresses, email addresses and QR codes in ordinary content, comments and private messages where those details are used to move users outside the platform.

Eligible advertisers can instead use approved commercial products, including RedNote’s official advertising and lead-management tools.

“RedNote should not be treated as an unrestricted route for moving users to another platform,” Ms Liu said. “International brands need to understand what information can be published, which contact routes are permitted and when official advertising tools are required.”

WeChat takes on a broader information role

The updated framework also reflects the increasing role of WeChat as a searchable business information environment.

Official Accounts, Video Accounts, Mini Programs and enterprise communication tools can be used to publish company information, explain services, provide recognised contact routes and handle customer enquiries.

Tencent’s Yuanbao AI assistant can draw information from parts of the Tencent ecosystem, including public content associated with Weixin services.

Gogetop Marketing says this creates a further reason for businesses to maintain clear and consistent Chinese-language information within WeChat. However, the agency cautions that operating an account does not guarantee inclusion in AI-generated results.

Relevant information must be publicly accessible, accurate and sufficiently clear for both users and search systems to understand.

“A WeChat presence is no longer only a follower communication channel,” Ms Liu said. “For some organisations, it is becoming part of the public information infrastructure through which consumers and AI tools can identify the company, understand its services and locate an official means of contact.”

The framework separates discovery from direct communication

Gogetop Marketing developed the updated framework after observing that international companies frequently manage RedNote content, WeChat accounts, paid advertising and customer service as separate activities.

This can leave consumers with inconsistent company descriptions or no obvious official route for further communication.

The framework recommends that businesses use each platform according to its permitted function.

RedNote content should support discovery, education and brand verification within the platform’s rules. Direct lead collection should use approved native or advertising tools where required.

WeChat can then provide official company information, service details, appropriate contact information, enquiries, bookings, account-based services and longer-term communication.

The framework does not encourage unauthorised movement of users between platforms.

“The aim is not to bypass platform rules,” Ms Liu said. “It is to make sure consumers can discover a brand, verify that it is legitimate and communicate through an official channel when they are ready.”
