St Etienne, The Lemonheads, Goldie Lookin’ Chain and Overpass among the first acts announced for Sheffield’s new Electric Studios.
Electric Studios has dropped its first wave of events, marking the arrival of a serious new player in Sheffield’s live music scene. Leading the charge are headline shows from cult US alt-rockers The Lemonheads, Welsh legends Goldie Lookin’ Chain, indie-electronic icons St Etienne, and new indie risers Overpass. Also confirmed is the long-awaited return of Stop Making Sense Live, bringing the full Talking Heads concert experience to the stage for one night only in May.
The newly launched city centre venue opens with an informed mix of live gigs and club nights running from March through to autumn. In a city often overlooked on national tour schedules, Electric Studios is offering something different with a programme that reflects the full range of musical tastes across Sheffield today. With tickets for all live shows already on sale, the first wave offers something for long-time gig goers, dance music fans and curious newcomers alike.
Following the live announcements is a stacked club programme under the Electric Loves banner. It begins on 13 March with a huge night from Worried About Henry, featuring Wilkinson, Camo & Krooked, Culture Shock, and Harriet Jaxxon. The following night sees Gentleman’s Dub Club headline a live dub session alongside Mungo’s Hi Fi and Aziza Jaye. On 20 March, Toddla T’s Steeze Factory take over with appearances from Window Kid, Saint Ludo and a live cypher session under the banner “Bigger Den We”. Other standout names across the club programme include Ross From Friends, Jeremy Underground, Dr Banana, sim0ne, Call Super, Sully and Samurai Breaks. Events will be hosted in collaboration with leading underground collectives including RAZE, Snafu and Big Fat Rave with each night powered by high-spec sound systems.
As well as hosting shows, Electric Studios will soon launch a call-out for young people to access free studio space in the building, giving local talent a place to create, rehearse and record. A new visual arts programme is also being developed, with a series of exhibitions in the works featuring Sheffield artists. More details on both initiatives will be announced in the coming weeks.
