EcoCareers is helping to bridge the skills gap in the green economy

It seems to be everywhere you look these days: talk of clean energy, net-zero targets, UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the push towards electric vehicles, and more. People and companies are beginning to take climate change seriously, and adjusting the way they operate accordingly. Governments are investing millions of dollars in green energy companies, leading to the promise of hundreds of thousands of jobs. Even businesses that aren’t in the green economy are looking to hire experts in sustainability.

So, why isn’t green development, with all this loads of potential, happening as quickly as it seems like it could? One word: talent. Green skills are desperately needed, and there are not enough skilled workers available at the moment to take up these positions. But a recently-launched resource site is hoping to help bridge that gap.

EcoCareers is an online jobs board and resource website for all jobs in sustainability, whether traditional green jobs like solar panel technicians or environmental scientists to jobs in industries that are newer to sustainability, like fashion and manufacturing. EcoCareers seeks to connect employers, hiring managers and HR personnel in the green sector with jobseekers and the top talent in their respective industries.

“Right now, more than 12 million people work in sustainability — although mostly in Asia,” said Joseph Boll, EcoCareers CEO. “Global estimates show that number could surpass 100 million within just seven years, providing high-quality, highly-skilled, high-paying jobs to hundreds of thousands of people in North America and Europe and providing significant growth to these economies. The challenge is in finding the right talent, and in them also aligning with the right opportunities to make the best use of their skill.”

Boll explained that dozens of sustainable businesses have reported struggling to find talented workers. “Meanwhile, just a few years ago, educated jobseekers with degrees in fields like environmental science struggled to find job opportunities. But now the position has switched and it’s the companies who are chasing after them. With this in mind, we launched EcoCareers hoping to help bridge the seeming gap between people with green skills and businesses looking for experts in sustainability.”

EcoCareers has previously urged even jobseekers with limited experience to consider green jobs now more than ever, as businesses are more willing to accept options for internships or apprenticeships that will enable new hires to build green skills as they go along. The organization is still emphasizing that message as it seeks to continue helping to connect companies with the best match for their available roles and vice versa.
