Dundee set to sparkle from November 17th

Dundee is once again set to sparkle as Christmas illuminations light up the city centre from November 17th.

The start of Christmas in Dundee, it will be the first opportunity for crowds to appreciate the city’s new Living Christmas Tree, which was planted at the City Churches earlier in the year.

Alongside the new tree, visitors will also be able to enjoy the five unique trees made from and inspired by recycled and reused materials which have been created in partnership with UNESCO City of Design and V&A Dundee. Created to celebrate the season by five Dundee-based designers, the structures will bring design into the heart of the city’s festive celebrations and will carry a message about sustainability and eco awareness into the heart of the city’s celebrations.

Dundee’s specially commissioned Christmas lights will also illuminate the city centre. Featuring iconic characters from DC Thomson comic books, and designs inspired by history, Dundonians will once again be able enjoy winter evenings brightened by the eye-catching designs.

Created using energy efficient LED bulbs, which use 1/5th of the energy of traditional incandescent light, they will help to ensure that Dundee will be celebrating a greener Christmas.

Councillor Mark Flynn, city development convener, said: “We really wanted to focus on this year’s festivities being sustainable in line with our climate commitments.

“We have also planted a tree at the City Churches, which will grow to over 65ft tall. It’s all very focused on being eco-friendly, which is really important.”
The lighting of the Living Tree is the first in a series of activities set to celebrate the festive period in the city. From the Dundee Hooley taking to the streets on Saturday November 26th, to the City Square festivities which begin on December 1st, and WinterFest which opens in Slessor Gardens on November 25th.

Dundee City Council leader, Councillor John Alexander, added: “The festive illuminations shining their magic on the city centre means the countdown to Christmas is truly under way.

“People in Dundee have told us that they wanted to see a more exciting Christmas offering, and we are delivering on that again this year.

“There’s plenty for locals and visitors alike to enjoy, and all of the Council-organised activities will be free. I look forward to more details being revealed soon!”
