Consultation underway for new Gateshead Quays arena, events and conference centre

Revised plans for a multi-million-pound development at the heart of Gateshead’s popular Quayside are being outlined during a public consultation exercise, launched yesterday (Feb 9).

The move sees an updated proposal by developers Ask:PATRIZIA for a £330 million development which will feature a 12,500-capacity indoor events arena, conference and exhibition centre, and a new linear park located on a  4.6-hectare site on land at Gateshead Quays.

The previously approved dual-branded hotel element of the Gateshead Quays development is set to be relocated to a new site on the corner of Quarryfield Road and Hawks Road and is subject to a separate planning application.

The revision is due to changes in operational and construction requirements and includes the integration of a new linear park, running from north to south along the eastern boundary of the application site. This is expected to provide an accessible pedestrian link between the Quayside promenade and the Baltic Business Quarter, connecting the Gateshead Quays development with the relocated dual-branded hotel.

The previously approved indoor arena and conference and exhibition centre plans have also been revised, undergoing minor design adjustments as part of the planning application. This includes the redesign of the eastern gable of the conference and exhibition centre, which will now be visible due to the removal of the dual-branded hotel.

If plans get the green light from Gateshead Council’s planning committee later in 2023, the development could generate a £137m uplift in economic output per annum throughout the construction period.

Lichfields is seeking the views of local people and stakeholders on the plans via a digital consultation by searching for ‘Gateshead Quays Development Consultation’.

Alex Kennedy, senior planner at the Lichfields Newcastle office, said: “This is a major regeneration project that represents a significant contribution to the vitality and vibrancy of an important local economic sector. Local residents, businesses and stakeholders are being consulted to showcase the many opportunities and benefits the investment will bring to Gateshead and the wider region.”

A spokesperson for the developers added: “This is a prestigious project that will not only create new jobs but also deliver a big boost to this important part of the city centre. We are keen to hear the views of as many people as possible, which will be considered before any plans are finalised and submitted to the local planning authority.”
