100,000 Passengers Eligible for Compensation Last Christmas, And This Year Could Be Worse…
Festive air travel in the UK is becoming increasingly unpredictable, with new data showing last Christmas was the most disrupted festive period in four years. According to figures from consumer-rights travel platform AirHelp.co.uk, almost two in five UK departures (39%) between 21 December and 5 January were delayed or cancelled, marking a sharp rise from 21% in 2021 and continuing a year-on-year upward trend.
The spike meant more than 100,000 passengers were legally entitled to compensation under UK and EU air-passenger regulations, yet many were unaware of their rights.
Growing Strain on the Festive Travel Season
Experts say the worsening disruption is the result of a “perfect storm” of winter weather, airport staffing shortages and increased schedule pressures on airlines. With passenger numbers expected to surge again this year, AirHelp.co.uk warns the trend is unlikely to reverse, and millions of holiday plans could once again be knocked off course.
“Travellers assume Christmas chaos is unavoidable, but what many don’t realise is that they often have the right to claim hundreds of pounds when their flight is delayed, cancelled or overbooked,” the organisation notes. Airlines are not required to proactively highlight these rights, meaning compensation frequently goes unclaimed.
Passengers Missing Out on Hundreds of Pounds
Under UK law, travellers may be entitled to up to £520 when significant disruption is caused by the airline. AirHelp.co.uk says the lack of awareness means a substantial portion of the 100,848 eligible passengers last Christmas never filed a claim.
The platform, used by more than 12 million people worldwide, offers tools to check eligibility instantly, guidance for filing claims directly with airlines and the option to have its global legal team handle the process. Its app also provides real-time flight tracking, automatic disruption alerts and the option to purchase extra protection through AirHelp Plus.
With a track record that includes 3 million passengers compensated and an “Excellent” 4.6/5 rating on TrustPilot, the company says it hopes better awareness will help travellers avoid financial loss during the busiest travel weeks of the year.
Prepare Early, Experts Advise
As the festive getaway approaches, passengers are being urged to plan ahead: monitor flights closely, understand compensation rules and consider tools that alert them the moment disruption hits.
“If last year is anything to go by, this Christmas could be just as turbulent,” AirHelp.co.uk warns. “The difference is that travellers can prepare, and make sure they’re not left out of pocket IF things go wrong”
