This St Piran’s Day, cinemas across Cornwall are inviting audiences to come together in celebration of Cornish culture, community and creativity with special screenings of The Lost Boys of Carbis Bay — the Cornish documentary that is enthralling audiences across the UK.
Fresh from winning Best Adventure & Exploration Film at the Kendal Mountain Festival, the film has already enjoyed multiple sold-out screenings — proving that real stories from Cornwall resonate.
Now, St Piran’s Day offers the perfect moment to celebrate Cornwall at the cinema.
A Cornish Story, On Cornish Screens
Shot over two years beneath the rugged Cornish coastline, The Lost Boys of Carbis Bay follows a tight-knit group of underground explorers called The Carbis Bay Crew uncovering the region’s forgotten mining heritage.
What begins as an adventure documentary unfolds into something far deeper — a portrait of friendship, resilience and the enduring character of Cornwall.
In the spirit of St Piran — the patron saint of tin miners — the film feels especially poignant. The story connects modern-day explorers with Cornwall’s rich industrial past, shining a light on the landscapes and histories that shape Cornish identity.
There could hardly be a more fitting way to celebrate this 5th March.
Director Dan Simpkins and Editor Angus Breton say:
“For us, this film has always been about Cornwall — its people, its history and the strength that comes from community. Releasing it around St Piran’s Day feels incredibly meaningful, because it honours the mining heritage that shaped this county and the connections that still sustain it today.”
A Crowd-Pleaser Across Cornwall
The film has been drawing packed houses and sold-out screenings across Cornwall, striking a chord with audiences. Among those in attendance was Cornish BAFTA award-winning director Mark Jenkin, who praised the film following a recent screening:
“Funny, poignant and totally exhilarating – beautiful filmmaking, fascinating story.”
Producer of the film Kirsty Malcolm from Roll Nine says:
“What I love about this film is it celebrates friendship, community and looking out for each other — and watching it together in a cinema makes that even more powerful. Sharing a story collectively reminds us that we’re not alone.”
Audience reactions have been equally enthusiastic, with film fans sharing heartfelt responses:
“A beautiful homage to how the land around us, combined with community provides solace and support for mental health, in a time when life moves so fast.” Kellymc97 – Letterboxd.
“A genuinely inspiring film.” Coco – Letterboxd.
“We loved it. We need more of these kinds of showings. Support your local indie cinemas.” Alan Jones – Letterboxd.
“A great promotion of local life in Cornwall.” Maisiepicko – Letterboxd.
Together, the responses reflect a film that resonates deeply — celebrating Cornwall, community and the power of shared stories on the big screen.
