California Mission Guide, an online resource dedicated to the history and visitor experience of California’s 21 Spanish missions, has launched the California Missions History Project, a new initiative to collect and preserve authentic family stories, memories, and historical perspectives from Native people and families whose ancestors were connected to the mission system.
For generations, much of the history of the California missions has been told through the records of missionaries, settlers, institutions, and later historians. While those sources remain important, they do not fully reflect the experiences of the Indigenous people whose lives, families, and communities were most deeply affected by the missions.
The California Missions History Project seeks to help broaden that history by inviting descendants of California’s Mission Indians to share their own family perspectives.
“Too often, the voices of Native families have been missing from the way California mission history is presented,” said Robert Nicholson, owner of CaliforniaMissionGuide.com. “This project is an effort to listen, preserve, and share those perspectives more fully, honestly, and respectfully.”
The project invites people with family stories connected to any of the 21 California missions to begin a conversation. These stories may include memories passed down through families, information about ancestors connected to a mission, reflections on how mission history shaped later generations, or accounts of how families have remained connected to the missions, the church, or surrounding communities over time.
Collected accounts will eventually be preserved and shared through the California Mission Guide website, with care and respect for the people and families who choose to participate.
California Mission Guide is also reaching out to mission staff, local historians, tribal representatives, community organizations, and others who may be able to help connect the project with Native families and descendants associated with individual missions.
