Blue Sky Building, the London-based Construction Management specialist, has been appointed to oversee delivery of the Barbican Renewal Programme, one of the UK’s most complex live heritage projects.
Barbican Renewal is a major investment to restore and revitalise the internationally recognised arts destination, making it more accessible, sustainable and able to thrive for the next 50 years.
An iconic example of post-war architecture, the Barbican Centre presents a unique combination of challenges. It is located within a vibrant residential community, visited by more than 1.5 million people each year and, as well as its numerous venues, includes a lakeside terrace, distinctive Brutalist foyers and central London’s largest conservatory. Alongside this significance, it is also categorised as a higher-risk building under the Building Safety Act. The renewal works, which aim to restore the original architectural vision and help achieve the City of London’s environmental ambitions, will require careful coordination to minimise disruption for residents, visitors, performers and staff, while protecting the estate’s architectural integrity and ensuring day-to-day activities continue while many of the works take place.

At the National Gallery, the company helped deliver the NG200 transformation programme while maintaining operations throughout the landmark bicentenary project. It is also currently acting as Delivery Manager for the British Museum’s £120 million Energy Centre Programme, coordinating complex infrastructure upgrades within a Grade I listed estate that welcomes millions of visitors every year.
