Bio-tech innovator MiAlgae appoints Head of Engineering and builds wider team

Pioneering biotech start-up, MiAlgae, has appointed Caroline Grant as Head of Engineering.

A chartered chemical engineer, Caroline will lead the engineering team and the delivery of the company’s commercial demonstrator site at Balfron, near Stirling. She will be responsible for rolling out the company’s novel technology and overseeing the design and build of commercial plants at distillery sites.

With a well-established network and a wealth of experience, Caroline previously spent fourteen years at sustainable food company, Kerry Group, as a Process Engineer.

Discussing her new appointment, Caroline Grant, Head of Engineering, said: “I’ve enjoyed an excellent first month at MiAlgae, getting to grips with my exciting new role and working with the fantastic team here. After more than a decade of working towards sustainable food source solutions, I’m looking forward to this new challenge and building on my previous experience.

“MiAlgae is championing the circular economy and has created something which has real potential to reshape the aquaculture and pet food industries for the better. The company has a very bright future and I look forward to playing my part in its growth.”

Further strengthening its team with four additional appointments, MiAlgae has also welcomed Guy Trimby as R&D Scientist, James Weatherly as Production Associate, Rebecca Skorupska as Quality Control Technician and Josie Waterworth as Office Administrator.

Established in 2016, MiAlgae has created a solution to promote a healthier world by producing a sustainable source of Omega-3 – something which is currently produced by extracting oil from billions of wild caught fish.

The company has developed a novel biotechnology platform which uses low-value coproducts from the food and drink industry as a feedstock to grow microalgae rich in Omega-3 oils.

All new recruits to MiAlgae will help the company to rapidly upscale its manufacturing capacity and enhance its sustainable offering to the aquaculture and pet food industries. The roles have been part funded by the Scottish Enterprise Green Jobs Fund which supports businesses to create roles which champion the environment and align with the Scottish Government’s net-zero goals.
