Author and journalist Vinay Jalla recently undertook a private visit to The Silk Museum and Paradise Mill in Macclesfield, uncovering profound connections between Britain’s industrial silk heritage and the traditional handloom weaving of his native Southern India. The visit highlighted the universal story of silk craftsmanship, a central theme in his debut novel, Warp and Weft.

Vinay Jalla’s visit was deeply personal, as he is the grandson of a revered South Indian “silk doyen,” the late Kasetty Srinivasulu, who built a significant handloom weaving business. This unique heritage provided a powerful lens through which to view Macclesfield’s history. A cherished family story recounts the moment in the 1960s when his grandfather presented a hand-woven silk garment to Queen Elizabeth II during her state visit to India, symbolising the shared cultural and economic ties between the two nations.

Inspired by his family’s legacy, Jalla’s novel, Warp and Weft, is a tribute to the resilience and artistry of generations of weavers. Set in the fictional Indian village of Zarivaram, the book traces the journey of an orphan who rises through the silk trade, exploring the sacrifices and triumphs of a community whose life is woven into fabric.

During his tour of Paradise Mill, which houses Europe’s largest collection of Jacquard silk handlooms, Jalla was particularly struck by the history of the female designers who mastered the complex card-punching system for the looms.

“Walking through Paradise Mill was like stepping into a parallel history,” stated Vinay Jalla. “I was fascinated to learn that it was the women designers who were the original ‘coders’ of the textile world, programming these incredible machines. It reminded me of the intricate patterns my grandfather held in his memory. It’s the same genius, expressed in two different but equally brilliant ways. The shimmering thread of silk connects the weavers of Macclesfield to the artisans of South India across continents and centuries.”

Jalla’s visit underscores a shared global heritage, celebrating the spirit of innovation and perseverance that unites weavers everywhere. By connecting the stories of Macclesfield’s mill workers with the characters in his novel, he hopes to contribute to the global conversation about the importance of preserving this extraordinary craft.
