Cyberattacks are getting a lot smarter, a lot faster this year. IBM recently reported that roughly one in four security breaches now involves some form of AI-enabled tactic, whether that means an attacker automating reconnaissance, generating convincing phishing lures, or probing for weaknesses at a scale no human red team could match on their own. For businesses and government agencies that depend on always-on connectivity, the pressure to keep networks both fast and secure has never been higher.

Doug Roberts, Chief Technology Officer at Cytranet, has spent the past year watching that pressure build from the inside. Cytranet provides internet, voice, and managed network services to business, government, and enterprise customers across North America, and Roberts says the shift in the threat landscape has changed how his team thinks about the infrastructure it builds.

“A few years ago, network resilience mostly meant redundancy: backup circuits, failover routes, generators for the data center,” Roberts said. “Now we have to assume that whatever is trying to get in is going to be faster and more adaptive than the last thing that tried. That means resilience has to be built into the network itself, not bolted on afterward.”

That mindset shows up in a trend Roberts has been tracking closely across the telecom industry: the move toward what some vendors are calling quantum-resilient network fabrics, paired with automated, AI-assisted threat detection that can respond to anomalies in real time rather than waiting for a human analyst to notice a spike in a dashboard. Large carriers have started rolling out these capabilities for their biggest customers, and Roberts believes the approach will trickle down to the regional and mid-market businesses Cytranet serves.

“The encouraging part is that this technology is no longer just for the Fortune 500,” Roberts said. “A regional hospital system, a county government, a manufacturer with three plants in three states, they all need the same baseline of protection now. Our job is to make sure that level of security doesn’t come with an enterprise-only price tag or a six-month implementation timeline.”

Roberts also points to a quieter but equally important shift: the steady march of fiber upgrades across the country, which he says is becoming a security story as much as a speed story. Internet service providers have increasingly settled on a gigabit connection as the baseline expectation for business customers, and Roberts argues that faster, modern fiber links make it easier to deploy the kind of continuous monitoring and encrypted traffic inspection that legacy copper and older fiber networks struggle to support.

“When your pipe is fast and modern, you can afford to do more inspection, more encryption, more monitoring without customers feeling it,” he said. “When it’s not, security teams are constantly trading performance for protection. We’d rather our customers not have to make that trade.”

For Cytranet, which has spent years building out network infrastructure for schools, municipalities, and enterprise clients across the region, Roberts says the current moment is less about a single new product launch and more about a philosophy the company has held for a while: that reliable, well-engineered infrastructure is itself a form of security.

“Nobody notices a network that just works,” Roberts said. “But that’s the goal. When AI is being used on both sides of the security fight, boring and dependable is exactly what our customers need us to be.”

As telecom providers across North America continue investing in AI-aware security tools and next-generation fiber, Roberts says he expects the conversation between IT leaders and their network providers to keep shifting from “how fast can you make us” to “how well can you protect us while you do it,” a question he believes Cytranet is well positioned to answer.
