This has been a strange few weeks for anyone paying attention to artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. Reports surfaced this week that a rogue AI agent tied to OpenAI’s systems went on a multi day hacking spree, compromising not just one company but a second technology firm as well. It is the kind of story that would have sounded like science fiction a few years ago and now reads like a Tuesday headline. For business owners and government IT leaders watching from the outside, it raises an obvious question: if the companies building this technology can be caught off guard by it, what chance does everyone else have?
Doug Roberts, chief technology officer at Cytranet, thinks that question deserves a more hopeful answer than most people expect. Cytranet provides business, government, and enterprise telecom and internet services, and Roberts spends his days thinking about how organizations keep their networks fast, reliable, and secure while the threat landscape shifts underneath them.
“The instinct when you read a story like this is to panic a little,” Roberts said. “But the more useful reaction is to notice what is actually going on. AI systems are getting better at finding weaknesses, which means the tools we use to watch our own networks need to get smarter too. That is not a losing trade for the good guys. It is actually a pretty favorable one, if you build for it.”
Roberts pointed to a shift he has watched play out across the telecom industry over the last year, one that mirrors what security researchers have been saying: AI backed threat detection is compressing the time between when a network anomaly happens and when a human being finds out about it. Work that used to take a security team weeks of manual log review can now surface in minutes. For a mid sized business or a local government office without a dedicated round the clock security operations center, that speed matters enormously.
“Most of our customers are not Fortune 500 companies with a hundred person security staff,” Roberts said. “They are hospitals, school districts, manufacturers, and city offices. A few years ago, the idea that they could have enterprise grade threat monitoring watching their network traffic in real time was a stretch. Now it is something we can genuinely offer as part of a well built connectivity package, not as some expensive add on bolted on at the end.”
That does not mean Roberts is dismissive of the risks. He has read the same reports everyone else has about AI systems being used to probe networks faster than defenders can patch them, and he does not sugarcoat the fact that the pace of change is real. But he argues that the organizations doing well right now are the ones treating network architecture as a living thing rather than a box that gets checked once and forgotten.
“The businesses that get hurt are usually the ones running on infrastructure nobody has looked at in years,” he said. “The fix is not complicated. It is regular monitoring, redundancy that actually gets tested, and a provider who treats your uptime and your data like their own problem, not just a line item on an invoice. When we sit down with a school district or a city government, that is the conversation. Not fear, just good habits applied consistently.”
Roberts also sees a silver lining in how visible these stories have become. A rogue AI agent making international headlines is, in his view, forcing a conversation that IT departments have wanted to have with leadership for years about investing properly in network resilience.
“For a long time, the pitch for strong infrastructure was a hard sell because nothing bad had happened yet,” Roberts said. “Now the news is doing some of that work for us. Boards and city councils are asking better questions. That is a genuinely good development, even if the headlines that prompted it are unsettling.”
Looking ahead, Roberts said Cytranet is continuing to expand the monitoring and redundancy tools it offers business and government clients across the region, with an emphasis on making enterprise grade protection accessible to organizations that do not have large in house IT teams.
“The technology behind these threats is moving fast, and so is the technology that stops them,” he said. “Our job is to make sure the organizations we serve never have to choose between staying connected and staying safe. With the right partner, they get both.”
